by adjusting the status of the match by one hole .
3 ) The referee for the match incorrectly interpreted the rule as a “ Loss of Hole ” penalty - Thus , the referee instructed Mickelson to pick up his ball and proceed to the next teeing ground . Under the rules , Mickelson could have continued playing the hole , since the side had not yet lost the hole and had only incurred the adjustment penalty . Both Mickelson and Johnson proceeded to and teed off on the 8th hole .
4 ) By picking up their ball and teeing off on the next hole , Mickelson and Johnson lost the 7th hole
- Although it appears like they lost the same hole twice , they really only lost the 7th hole once because they picked up their ball and teed off on the next hole . Again , the violation of the One-Ball Rule was an adjustment penalty of the status of the match , not a loss of hole penalty . Although the referee is deserving of some of the blame , Rule 6-1 states that the player and his caddie are responsible for knowing the Rules .
Fortunately , the United States was still able to overcome the controversy and pull out a 15.5-14.5 victory over the International Team .
