MID-AMATEUR PREVIEW October 5th - 6th ~ Bull’s Bridge Golf Club 28th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship Bull’s Bridge Golf Club in South Kent celebrated it 10th anniversary in 2014, and although it’s one of the CSGA’s “youngest” member clubs, Bull’s Bridge blends easily into one of Connecticut’s most historic locations. As the annual site of the CSGA Tournament of Champions and host of the 2015 Connecticut MidAmateur Championship, its own golf history grows with every season. The club takes its name from a nearby covered bridge that dates back to the Colonial era. While Jacob Bull built it to provide access to his grist and sawmill, the bridge reportedly offered passage to George Washington on four occasions during the Revolutionary War. Centuries later, the popular tourist attraction still remains active to car traffic spanning the Housatonic River just a few miles from the club. Bull’s Bridge features spectacular views throughout the Tom Fazio designed course. Surveying the magnificent landscape, his only design project in Connecticut, the world renowned Fazio remarked, “This is an outstanding piece of land for golf in a 36 | CSGA Links // September, 2015 setting that is nothing short of spectacular. As a designer, it’s what you hope and dream for in a project.” The property’s rugged elevation changes are effectively incorporated into the layout, sometimes subtly and other times dramatically. The sweeping fairways are often framed by distinctively sculptured white sand bunkers. New England style stonewalls weave throughout the course creating charm and challenge. Of all the course’s unique characteristics, the greens are possibly the most outstanding feature, gaining notoriety as some of the finest in the state. The artfully constructed contours and the purest of putting surfaces create a challenging yet enjoyable putting experience. In addition to hosting the Mid-Amateur on October 5th and 6th, Bull’s Bridge will also host the CSGA Tournament of Champions on September 8th. The 2015 Connecticut Mid-Amateur will mark the first Mid-Amateur hosted at Bull’s Bridge Country Club. www.csgalinks.org
