Connecticut Finishes Third in New England Junior
T
he Rhode Island Junior
team walked away from the
2015 New England Junior
Invitational with all the silver as they
combined for a best-five-of-seven
three-round total of 1,085, winning
over defending champs Massachusetts
by a commanding 19 shots. Connecticut
finished in third place, nine shots
behind Massachusetts.
Hosted by Maine at the
par 71 Purpoodock Club in Cape
Elizabeth, and played August 17-18,
the championship was dominated
throughout by the Ocean State squad.
Patrick Welch of Metacomet claimed
medalist honors at 2-under 211, and his teammate
Davis Chatfield of Wannamoisett was runner up at
212.
Connecticut and the CSGA returned three
players from the 2014 squad, Max Theodorakis
from Danbury and Ridgewood Country Club, Jason
Liu from Windsor and Wintonbury Hills Golf
Course, and Michael VanDerLaan from Southbury
and the Country Club of Waterbury. Joining that
threesome were Justin Clark from New Canaan and
Rolling Hills Country Club, Adam Friedman from
Westport and Birchwood Country Club, Connor
Looney from Ridgefield and TPC River Highlands,
and Tim Rotermund from Madison and Madison
Country Club.
Connecticut placed two players in the top-10.
Theodorakis, alone in 4th after rounds of 72-73-71
(216) was Connecticut’s top finisher. Lui finished 8th
at 219. Liu’s rollercoaster final round 68 tied for low
round of the tournament. The 16 year-old birdied
five of his first six holes and offset five bogies with
an eagle and another birdie to finish at three-under
for the day.
