Gallo Claims Fourth Open Title

E
everything about Kyle Gallo’s golf game
is smooth and steady. So when he pullhooked his tee shot on the first hole of
the final round into ankle-high fescue, his reaction
was more of a shrug than a gasp. After all, the 35
year-old three-time past champion and four-time
runner-up had fired runds of 65 and 64 to take
a six shot lead into the final 18 holes of the 76th
Connecticut Open.
After that, I settled into it,” Gallo said. “I
knew I had been playing well over the last couple
of fays and once I got settled in, I was very
comfortable. I knew if I played my game, that
would be good enough.”
Indeed it was. Despite the opening bogey,
which reduced his lead over Timberlin GC
amateur Cody Paladino to four, he managed a
three-stroke victory with a final round 71 for a
record-tying 10-under score of 200. New Haven
CC’s Evan Beirne, the reigning Russell C. Palmer
Cup champion, gave Gallo his toughest challenge,
firing a final round 66 to finish three shots back.
Gallo won the first of his four Opens as an
amateur when he defeated CC of Waterbury pro
Tom Gleeton in a playoff at Ellington Ridge CC
in 1998. He took top honors as a pro in 2000 at
the CC of Farifield and in 2004 at Mill River CC.
