Around the State: News & Notes
Cameron Wilson
(Rowayton, Conn.) and Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) both
successfully qualified and competed in the 114th United States Open Championship at Pinehurst,
North Carolina. Stegmaier, who currently has full
status on the Web.com Tour, advanced through the
Columbus, Ohio Sectional with rounds of 67-72-139 to earn his first trip to the U.S. Open. Wilson,
who recently won the NCAA Division I Individual
Championship, was the first alternate from the
Purchase, New York sectional and was a last-minute
addition to the field. The USGA typically holds three
additional spots for potential moves in the World
Golf Rankings prior to the tournament. With no
movement in the OWGR, Wilson was one of three
added to the field, advancing to his second U.S.
Open in three years.
Brett Stegmaier
Ironically, both Wilson and Stegmaier were
paired together in the first group of the Championship
on Thursday, beginning their round at 6:45 a.m. off
the 1st tee. Unfortunately, both would go on to miss the cut of +5 145. Stegmaier shot rounds of
77-74--151 and Wilson shot round of
78-70--148.
Both Wilson and Stegmaier
competed in numerous CSGA
championships as amateurs. Wilson
finished 2nd in the Dick Tettelbach
Player of the Year Points Race in
2009, and Stegmaier finished 2nd
in the 2004 POY race highlighted
by Runner-Up finishes in the
Connecticut Open Championship and
New England Amateur.
The U.S. Open marked Wilson’s
last tournament as an amateur, as
he made his professional debut the
following week at the Traveler’s
Championship (pictured right).
