the 2007 Honda Classic, Mark
Wilson, seeking his first PGA
Tour victory, was leading the tournament on
Friday when Camilo Villegas asked Wilson’s
caddie what club he thought Wilson used.
The caddie, without realizing the gravity of
his response, replied he thought that the
hybrid was eighteen degrees, equal to a
two or three-iron.
According to Rule 8-1, a player or caddie
must not give advice to anyone playing in
the competition other than his partner. The
penalty for such a violation is two-strokes.
Overhearing the conversation, Wilson
promptly called the penalty on himself. He
then proceeded to put his arm around the
disconsolate caddy and told him to forget
it, and said he had not even had a second
thought about calling the penalty.
Wilson rebounded from the penalty by
playing the next 49 holes at eight underpar, catapulting him into a four-man playoff.
Wilson got into the playoff largely because
of a 45-foot par save at the par-4 16th late
in the fina
