Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug
This month , our course spotlight is on Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug , located in Baltic , Connecticut . Originally established in 1960 as Pautipaug Country Club , the course was originally designed by renowned architect Geoffrey Cornish . Like most country clubs , Pautipaug entered into difficult times with the downturn of the economy , and in 2007 , the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority purchased the club .
They subsequently closed the course and underwent a massive renovation by Robert McNeil that included new tees and putting surfaces , seventy new bunkers , and a state of the art irrigation system . In addition , the remodeling included lengthening the course by an additional 125 yards , stretching it to nearly 6,800 yards from the Championship tees . The result has been a complete transformation that has put the course on every golfer ’ s “ must-play ” list
One of the most noticeable changes included a complete remodel of the 6th hole ( pictured right ), which is now a 495 yard Par-4 from the back tees . McNeil used Ayers Brook , which meanders through the property , to implement the massive lake along the left side of the hole that forces players to play a precise tee shot . From the fairway , the approach site carries over a cascading waterfall with water bordering the left side of the green .
