in the morning. Sciarretta opened both nines in the
afternoon with doubles, but managed four birdies in dif-
ficult conditions to stay in contention.
Ben Conroy of New Haven Country Club was
the last of the four golfers under par, finishing 72-70-72
(-1). Greenwich High School Junior Jackson Fretty, 17,
led with a 68 (-3) on Day One. Incredibly, it was Fretty’s
first round at Farmington. “I hadn’t seen the course be-
fore so I played conservately,” he said. “I got off to a pretty hot start, with birdies on the first
two par-3s.” Four players shot 69, including Seth Jainchill of Keney Golf Club, Nick Piersall
of TPC River Highlands, Kong and Sciaretta. They were the only players in the 60s that first
day on the 6245-yard, Par 71 Devereux Emmet design. Piersall placed 6th, Fretty 12th.
New Haven’s Timothy Kane, who shot 72-70-72-214, was one of five from the club
to make the cut. He finished fifth at plus one and said Tuesday’s conditions, especially in the
afternoon, when the wind was up and temperatures down, made scoring tough. “This morn-
ing there wasn’t a bit of wind. The course was soft. I won’t say it was it was playing easy, but it
was playing as easy as this golf course will play. Then it began to rain, got colder and by the
end of the round it was playing 2 or 3 clubs longer. It was a grind.”
“I’ll always play the Palmer Cup,” said Kane. “Mr. Palmer was just a wonderful man.
I’ll never forget getting a note from him after winning the Amateur. It was just one of the
neatest things I’ve ever gotten.”
