NORDIC & ALPINE SKIING WITH THOUSANDS OF MILES OF NORDIC TRAILS that seem to interconnect every community, plus a few great places for alpine skiing, winter is when the region really shines for those who enjoy outdoor winter sports. Take a wintry walk in snowshoes atop the snow (even in the calm of the night) to enjoy the solace that brings so many to The County. For those dedicated to winter sport, connect up with one of the many clubs or facilities and make sure to get all tuned up or grab some gear in town before you hit the trails. Some additional ways to make the best of the short but beautiful winter days include dog sledding, skijoring (Nordic skiing aided by dogs), ice climbing, fat biking, snow tubing, and even biathlon. For those just out for the fun of it, there’s ski touring, sledding, pond hockey, or ice-skating on a serene frozen lake. The opportunities to keep active continue even once the sun goes down as many ski centers and mountains offer lighted trails. With a LED headlamp and a sense of adventure, even the darkened trail becomes easy to navigate. While you are out there, remember to turn your eyes skyward for the chance to catch the Northern Lights. The best thing about wintertime trails is that once the weather turns warm, most become an ideal location for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, or even just a walk in the woods.
