EACH REGION AND SEASON OF THE COUNTY
offers so many things to do, it might be hard to pick a favorite.
FOUR REGIONS
The four regions that make up The County are found around US Route 1
to the east and Route 11, running alongside the Maine Woods to the west.
Houlton is the heart of Southern Aroostook and is home to popular annual
events, including the Blackf ly Brewfest with over 100 beers. Visit the historic
Market Square for its shops or to grab a bite to eat. The cities of Presque
Isle and Caribou keep commerce alive in Central Aroostook, where you’ll
find the region’s largest hotels, great places to dine, and easy access to outdoor
recreation at Aroostook State Park or The Nordic Heritage Center.
Those looking for the cultural heart of Aroostook County should head to the
St. John Valley—with local family roots that go back to the mid-1600s—
and the communities along the St. John River from Fort Kent south and
east to Van Buren and west to Eagle Lake. A little further west, beyond the
Route 11 corridor, you’ll find yourself in the North Maine Woods with its
millions of acres of timberland. A coveted vacation destination for centuries,
its remote location offers unfettered access to outdoor recreation.
FOUR SEASONS
Each of The County’s four seasons delivers countless wonders that make it
worth a visit. Winter is a true wonderland. Our snowpack for snowmobiling,
snowshoeing, and skiing is unbeatable. Head out for a day of ice fishing with
friends, attend the festive Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Race,
and keep an eye open for the Northern Lights. Spring is a wake-up call for
the sleeping giant of Aroostook County. A million shades of green emerge, and
the deep snows depart. Hungry fish offer a challenge in cold swirling pools,
fiddleheads unfurl, while wildlife emerges from a winter hideaway.
Summer delivers 100 days of thrills. Ride along miles of open road. Paddle
and fish from heavenly streams, rivers, and lakes. Hike or ride a vast network
of trails that connect our towns to our great outdoor spaces. Take the crew to
a fair or hit the fairway for some golf. You can easily find a way to soak in all
that the season has to offer. Autumn visitors receive the gift of gold, crimson,
and orange as leaves signal the impending return of snow. Agricultural fairs,
fruit from the orchard, an afternoon paddle along the Aroostook River, and
the thrill of a guided hunt are all reasons to be thankful for the season.
