Yeah it is true, self-proclaimed Jesus and rapper Kanye West is one of the latest celebrities that has been awarded an honorary doctoral degree. The modern art enthusiast (who knew) was awarded a Ph.D from the Art Institute of Chicago. After his famous album “The College Dropout” he already hinted at eventually achieving a college degree with is successive album, “Graduation”. Now reality has surpassed predict, as Yeezy has become a Doctor in Art. A good educational foundation for his plan to run for president of the United States of Let’s dive into the roots of a famous graduation tradition that America in 2020. #VOTEDR.WEST. started in the USA and has since moderately expanded overseas to Europe and the Netherlands. I am talking about the tradition of throwing the “mortarboard”, A.K.A. that square graduation cap with a string on the top, high in the sky after students receive their certificates. This tradition finds its origin in the USA Navy in 1912, at the U.S. Naval Academy’s graduation. For the first time the Navy gave the newly commissioned graduates their Officers’ hats at graduation, so they no longer needed the Midshipmen’s caps they had been wearing for the past four years of their education. To show how pleased they were, the newly promoted officers tossed their old headgear up in the air. Students from other studies heard about this tradition and quickly followed suit. Bonus fact: Health and Safety Initiatives of Universities are putting bans on this tradition, because of the supplementary danger of falling caps with sharp edges, stating they will “Photoshop the caps in later”. If they are willing to go this far, can they also photoshop Jennifer Aniston by my side as my graduation date please and thank you? We jump fro m one of the most remarkable degrees to two of the most impressive degrees. One attained by a man going by the name Leo Plasse. Plasse, at age 99, is the oldest known recipient who has obtained a General Educational Development (GED) degree. Strikingly, Plasse dropped out of college in 1932 when he was just 20, to pursue a career in the logging industry. 79 Years later, the Oregon resident finished what he started and received an Associates degree from Eastern Oregon University. You’re never too old to learn, right? On the other side of the spectrum we have Michael Kearney, who is the youngest known high school and college graduate. Kearney, currently 33 years old, finished a homeschool high school programme at age 6 and at age 10 he earned a bachelor’s degree. I am positive he will soon be president of the intergalactic Universes and beyond. 36
