Just as John feels he has found his thrill his cell phone rings, “Hello?” “How’s it going Johnny?” John holds the phone away from his face and quietly says, “Damn.” It’s his boss’s assistant Gable, who is just waiting for John to fail. “It’s going pretty good. What’s up?” John asks curiously though he knows what Gable is up to. With a semi-sarcastic tone Gable says, “Ah… Mr. Carline wanted me to touch base and remind you that the cast reading is this weekend.” And just as sarcastically John replies, “You’re fucking kidding me? …This weekend? Oh shit I better get on it then, huh Gable?” “You don’t have to get snooty with me John. I’m just the messenger.” “Tell Winston that everything will be fine.” “Let me make a note of that so I don’t forget to tell Mr. Carline.” “Gable… Do whatever it is you do okay? I’m busy here. Goodbye.” John simply closes his cell phone and goes back to his fixation. The woman comes out of the café and is looking for a table. As she looks in John’s direction, they return healthy smiles and she walks towards him. He can’t believe she’s coming to him. “You’re welcome to sit here if you’d like?” John stands and offers her a seat at his table. “Thank you.” John can’t believe how amazing this woman’s features are. He can’t even tell what her nationality is. She could be South American but her “thank you” had no accent. She could be Italian, Polish or Jewish. “This is a nice day, wouldn’t you say?” She says as she preps her food. “Yes it is. These are the days when I’m so glad to be living in Southern California.” John is looking at this woman and he is convinced, this is a beautiful woman. And she has on not one bit of make up. “I know what you mean. Here we are in the middle of February and the weather is like summer. I love it.” John smiles like a little boy. He is almost blushing. “Where are you from?” The woman looks at John curiously. His smile is pleasant but it’s a little creepy at the same time. She noticed that John has checked her breast out more than enough. Regardless, she feels a slightly good vibe from him. Plus she is so used to men talking to her breast and not her. “I’m from Simi Valley, how about you?” “I’m from Cleveland, Ohio… THE Oh H 10 as we like to call it.” John brags. “That’s a cute one… I’ve met people from Cleveland. The people are nice, must be a pretty chill city.” 53 THE CONE - ISSUE #5 - SUMMER 2015
