From the Editor’s Desk
It has been a hard and beautiful Summer. Hard with the passing
of my father and beautiful with the overwhelming love and
adventure experienced in the countryside of Sweden ( “Chasing
the Light” p.50 ). It was the first Summer in a long while where I
played with the same exuberance I had in my childhood, perhaps
even more so, if that is possible. Summer seems to carry with it
the element of escape - kids escape school, families escape for
vacation, in some European cities, like Praha (Prague), locals
escape the onslaught of tourists and we are able to revel in
whatever form of escape Summer brings to us. I
suppose even my father’s death was the ultimate
escape for him - though not afflicted with a chronic
illness, circumstances brought him to a place where
he was truly ready to escape this place. The way it will
inform my life going forward is as yet unknown, as I
am only at the beginning of that long journey. But as
journey’s go I have not experienced one quite as
beautiful and sweet as the one I took in Sweden. In
traveling to Gallno Island for the nuptials of my dear
friends I found myself enveloped in a safe cocoon of
warmth, love and joy. Later traveling through the
picturesque Swedish countryside our band of 16
“gypsies” became a road family, easily living side by
side, laughing, playing, documenting and absorbing
each moment. Little did I know that it was a form of
escaping myself and all that I was carrying with me.
Now as I ease back into the various responsibilities of
my everyday, I look forward to future adventures on
the road, to star filled warm Summer nights and great
escapes of mind, body and soul.
