Art & Artists TC - What other artists do you feel influenced your work in some way? LB I think some major influences for my current work are the works of Brett Amory for mood, Alex Veranese for the design aspect, Andrew Hem for his bold colors, and Swoon for her cut and paste abilities and vision. And all of the background artists form the movie Tekkonkinkreet! I have the art books sitting in my studio for motivational and inspirational purposes at all times. I also come from a background that is heavily influenced by animation, video games and graphic novels. I think you can definitely pick that up in some my work. I feel my pieces sometimes look like a background for a dark comic book in the style of Frank Miller maybe... TC -What about architecture and that art/design form attracts you and inspires your work? LB That’s a good question. I’m not sure actually… I think it kind of goes back to my answer on your first question. And this may sound cheesy but I feel like you can discover a lot about a place’s culture through its architecture. The buildings tell the story and spark your imagination. Or at least I’d like to think so. TC -Your works are mixed media, and I was curious whether the ideas for a new work started from the photographs you take or do you have ideas and find elements to make the idea come to life? LB I usually have a general idea of the imagery I want to create. I then go through all the photos I have that are relevant to what’s happening in my head and start picking out the pieces. Sometimes it happens very fast and organically, sometimes it takes FOREVER. That’s why it’s really hard for me to tell people “how long did it take to make one of these”. It really depends on that process of finding the right images. Copyright - Liz Brizzi 30 THE CONE - ISSUE #1 - SPRING 2014
