Like many young lawyers in this day and age, I enjoy the independence in handling my cases to a large extent. The self-given autonomy gives me more control over the directions in which the cases are headed. For those interested, there are numerous tips and practical guidelines on how to set up a law firm in Malaysia. You will find much material available on the internet for instance, the Malaysian Bar website, legal career related forums, law magazines, and other educational platforms. However, there is no true rule of thumb regarding this subject. That makes it all the more personalised and exciting. Taking the first step by reading up and consulting those who have been “at the scene” would be a good start. As a sole proprietor, it took me a considerable amount of courage and effort to plan and set my foundations right. I thought up of my goals for the firm, wrote up plans on how to achieve them, and then walked the path. Where I met hurdles, I devised and actualised strategies to conquer them. Whether you are looking to set up a law firm or to join a partnership, it is always important to picture yourself in the outfit that best suits your character and personal traits. Amongst the vital qualities to have are: a positive outlook; commitment; patience; resilience; and the list goes on. The devil is in the details, and to each his own. Ultimately, if you are prepared to own your dream and walk that seemingly intimidating path, you will find a way to realise that dream of yours. I’m confident of that. Good luck!
