BESPOKE SOLUTIONS AT BASKARAN
About Myself
I was educated at St John’s Institution, Kuala Lumpur, read law at King’s
College, London, and was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn. I have always
enjoyed reading very much. I enjoyed history and literature in school and
college. It seemed a natural progression to then read law at King’s.

• Thayananthan has appeared
as Counsel in several
domestic and international

the High Court of Malaya and
the appellate courts of
Malaysia in relation to
construction disputes
• Thayananthan was appointed
as an adjudicator in the
fifteenth adjudication
registered under the
Malaysian Construction
Industry Payment and
Adjudication Act 2012 and
now regularly sits as an
adjudicator.
I am the principal of Baskaran, Kuala Lumpur, a specialist construction and
technology law firm. I am also an associate member of Crown Office
Chambers, London.
What Do I Do?
My primary area of practice is construction law. I draft building and
engineering contracts, advise on disputes arising from such contracts and
appear as Counsel in adjudication, arbitration and mediation to resolve
these disputes. I also sit as an adjudicator, arbitrator and mediator.
Baskaran, my law firm, was established as a specialist construction and
technology law practice. The idea is to bring together advocates who are
interested in this specialist field and provide them the resources and
opportunities to build a practice that has a sound foundation (no pun
intended) of experience and knowledge. I would encourage students who
are interested in these areas of practice to apply to us for internships and
pupillage.
Apart from this, I am an editor of the Construction Law Digest, the journal
of the Society of Construction Law Malaysia, and Construction Law
International, the magazine of the International Bar Association’s
International Construction Projects Committee. I am also in the middle of
writing International Arbitration in Malaysia, which is to be published by
Kluwer Law International next year.
Attributes of a Lawyer
Any form of injustice should be repulsive to a lawyer. A lawyer should then
have the passion and perseverance to try to reverse this injustice and
achieve a just result in all circumstances. Perhaps, most importantly, you
must love the process of trying to achieve this just result, which usually
involves a considerable amount of reading and a few fleeting moments of
advocacy.
