UNE COM BAKE-OFF

The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) and Culinary Medicine held the 2nd annual UNE COM Bake-Off in the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences. Culinary Med provided a number of tasty treats for the community to sample and vote for their favorite. The prettiest was determined to be second-year student, Mark Bernardo's macarons; the cookie cheesecake bars of first-year student, Melissa Allahua, snagged the tastiest, and best overall awards. Students, faculty and professional staff all dropped by the table to make a monetary contribution and indulge in their sugar-overload for the day. It was well worth the chance to support SOMA in their goal to attend the OMED conference in October.

OPIOID OVERDOSE AND RESPONSE TRAINING

The Addiction Medicine Club sponsored an Opioid Overdose and Response Training. Over 100 students from the Health Professions attended and listened to a representative from Portland Public Health speak on the prevalence of overdoses in the state, and how health professionals can respond. The talk covered topics from mechanisms of overdose, naloxone, and how to administer naloxone safely in instances of overdose. Students who attended the training earned a local certification.
