UNE COM STUDENTS PRESENT AT THE EASTERN PAIN ASSOCIATION

By Seth Butler, OMS-II

Four COM medical students presented two research projects at Eastern Pain Association’s 2018 annual meeting. Charlotte Barker, OMS-III, (co-author Danielle Sultan, OMS-III, could not attend) won first place for their poster about the effectiveness of the inter-professional and multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management that is offered through the Living Life Well Program offered at the Mercy Pain Clinic, Portland, ME. The second set of presenters were co-authors: Seth Butler, OMS-II, and Liem Nguyen, OMS-II. Their poster was about their research project that focused on a new method to assess pain sensitivity in chronic pain patients versus people without pain. They won second place for their presentation. UNE COM students were the only matriculating medical students who presented posters at the conference.

Both projects were done in collaboration with Dr. Stephen Hull, Director of the Mercy Pain Center, and, under the guidance of Dr. Ling Cao, MD, PhD, associate professor of Biomedical Sciences, COM.

EM CLUB FOSTER COMMUNITY AWAY FROM HOME

A dozen UNE COM students attended the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) Conference in Chicago, IL. While in the windy city, the group held a team building dinner to foster community, and discuss future developments of the Emergency Medicine Club, discuss application strategies for applying for EM residencies, and encouraging communication between years 1-4 of the EM Club.
