In addition, two incredible COM students received recognition: Justine Lazatin, OMS-III received the Humanism in Medicine scholarship from the SOMA Foundation; and Samantha Culver, OMS-II was elected to the National SOMA Board of Trustees as the Region I Trustee covering eight osteopathic medical schools from UNE COM to PCOM. Of her new position, Sam states, “I will be serving as their region leader, helping them plan their events, foster collaboration through the region and develop leadership training for our conferences. I will also be their connection to the national board. My responsibilities on the national board are still being determined because each region trustee (there are 5) takes on a few national projects and we have yet to designate those; but broadly we help to strategize goals for national SOMA and help plan our three conferences.”

UNE COM had much to celebrate at this year’s national medical conference, OMED in San Diego. The UNE COM chapter of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) was recognized as the winning COM in national SOMA’s annual Charity Miles competition. This competition encourages osteopathic medical students to remain physically active throughout medical school to encourage student wellness.
