He explains in more detail what the QS role entails, “QS manages the budget. We compile monthly reports for the client on where we are standing currently, and when we estimate completion, while in the background, we manage the procurement of all subcontracts. The main contractor mainly does the wet works: concrete, earthworks, brickwork, plastering and paintwork, and the rest is all subcontracted. Then during that work, we remeasure the whole project to try and get to a final number with the contractor, and to report correctly to that final number. That is basically what we do on a daily basis,” he says. “In terms of construction, we are sitting at about 65% completion,” Reid concludes. 18 - CEC January 2018 • • • • • • 185 no. 600mm diameter soldier piles ranging in depth from 12m to 28m 13 no. 900mm diameter cantilever piles to support 8m-high soil face and 29 no.125mm diameter cantilever micropiles to support a 3.5m-high face with the emergency walkway immediately behind these. 249 no. four-strand anchors to support existing basement walls 954 no. strand anchors varying in capacity between 600 and 900KN to regain the unique soil faces bordering the Maude Str., Balalaika, Protea and Holiday Inn Hotels 633 no. hollow bars/rock bolts 10 800m² of gunnite face 265 000m³ soil excavation About 60 000m³ of rock blasting (bulk and hand blasting)
