Saudi Arabia to build refinery, petrochemical plant in SA Project: Oil refinery construction Client: Saudi Ministry of Energy Location: South Africa Saudi Arabia plans to build an oil refinery and a petrochemical plant in South Africa as part of its previously announced USD10-billion of investments in the country. Saudi oil would be used in the planned refinery whose construction would be led by state energy company Saudi Aramco, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said in comments following a meeting with South African energy minister, Jeff Radebe. The exact location of the refinery and petrochemical plant was to be finalised only in Q1 2019. Saudi Arabia was also interested in using South Africa’s major oil storage facilities, and Saudi utility developer Acwa Power was reportedly looking at investing in South Africa’s revamped renewable energy programme. There were discussions about the kingdom investing in South Africa’s state defence company Denel, which was exclusively reported by Reuters in November. nn Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih. PROJECT OWNERS Marriott expands in Africa. Marriott signs deals for three new hotels in Africa Project: Hotel development Client: Marriott International Location: Morocco, Ghana, and Liberia Marriott International has announced plans to develop three new hotels in each of Morocco, Ghana, and Liberia. In Morocco, the St. Regis Marrakech Resort will be part of the Assoufid Golf Resort and will include 80 luxury rooms and villas. In Ghana, the Residence Inn by Marriott Accra Kotoka Airport will be a 12-storey hotel with 160 suites. Projected to open in 2023, the hotel will be managed by franchisee Yamusah Hotels Management Company, the owner and developer. Marriott’s debut in Liberia will be the Four Points by Sheraton Monrovia. Anticipated to open in 2020, the hotel will consist of 111 rooms in Monrovia’s central business district. It is a franchised property owned by Sea Suites Hotel and will be managed by Aleph Hospitality. The company made the announcement in January at the Forum de l’Investissement Hôtelier Africa in Marrakech.
Last year, Marriott International said it wanted to increase its African portfolio by 50% by 2023, bringing the total to 200 hotels and 38 000 rooms. nn Makhanda wind energy project Project: Wind farm Client: Plan-8 Infinite Energy Location: Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) a maximum of 27 turbines, each with a nominal power output ranging between 2MW and 3MW. The total potential generating capacity of the wind farm will be approximately 67.5MW and will feed power into the national electricity grid. nn Construction of a wind farm approximately 30km outside of Makhanda along the N2 in an easterly direction towards East London, is planned for the Eastern Cape.
