P a g e | 23 Environment KEY FINDINGS:  Thirty-one percent of Sangamon County residents report litter/improper trash disposal is a “big problem” in Sangamon County. This is four percentage points higher than the 2013 survey results.  Sangamon County residents living in zip code 62703 are more likely to report litter/improper trash disposal is a problem than residents living in any other zip code. Residents living in the metro area are more likely than non-metro residents to report that litter is a problem.1  Sixty-eight percent of Sangamon County residents report recycling in their homes. This is slightly higher than the 66 percent who reported recycling in 2013 but still significantly less than the national average of 77 percent.2  Married individuals or individuals in a domestic partnership or civil union report recycling at a higher rate than single respondents, 73 percent versus 60. This difference is likely attributable to differences in income and homeownership. Respondents judge litter to be a problem in Sangamon County though not necessarily in their own neighborhoods. Seventy-nine percent of respondents say litter/improper 100% trash disposal is either a “big” or “small 80% problem” in Sangamon County.
