With more than 80 eight students, seven faculty and 25 crew members, “Seussical the Musical” was an absolutely enormous production. Director Jamie Hutteman, the Middle School theater teacher, was happy to share some of her thoughts on the fall musical.

Many members of the Providence Day community had one simple question: What is “Seussical” even about? The plot is simple; there isn’t one. Mrs. Hutteman described it as “a fractured fairy tale that includes many of the main plot points from Dr. Seuss books,” focusing on “Horton Hears a Who” and “Horton Sits on the Egg.”

Mrs. Hutteman also said Horton (played by Mario Perdomo) was probably her favorite character, not necessarily because of the actor, but because her favorite book as a child was “Horton Sits on the Egg.”

Audiences were treated to big, catchy numbers. When asked about her favorite song in the production, Mrs. Hutteman had a hard time choosing. She finally

settled with “All For You,” a “cute, funny solo sung by Gertrude Mcfuzz (played by Katherine Cherok) to Horton.”

In addition to many addictive songs, audiences also enjoyed tons of colorful, fun costumes, including Gertrude’s tail, which gradually expanded throughout the play!

Not only was there a wide diversity of talent in the large cast, but there was also an extremely skilled and hard-working crew behind the scenes. With new lighting and sound technology, “Seussical” was different from any play produced so far at PDS.

In addition to these new technical elements, the play also featured gymnastics with trampolines, ladders built into the set, and even some flying!

Mrs. Hutteman said that she was especially proud of the way that all different ages came together to create something spectacular on stage. Although coordinating a group this large was one of the biggest challenges in directing “Seussical,” Mrs. Huttman said that it was well worth the effort in order to see the magic of Dr. Seuss come to life.
