Costa Rican artist Fabio Herrera was on campus as part

of Providence Day School’s Global Artist-in-Residence program Oct. 21-23.

Herrera is widely renowned and has won countless awards. For example, he won the gold medal in watercolor and first prize in competitions of rural landscapes in Costa Rica from 1972 to 1974. He also received the National Engraving Prize-Serigrafia 1991 Costa Rica, two honorable mentions in the International Biennial of Engraving in Taiwan and Peru, and national awards for painting in Costa Rica in both 1996 and 2001 with the Group Bocaracá of Costa Rica. These are just some of the many awards that Fabio Herrera has received.

Herrera has been called the "artist of his generation" in Costa Rica and has breathed new life into the Costa Rican Arts. He brought new ideas and techniques to Costa Rica’s often convention art world. One technique Fabio uses is texture. He will mix marble dust into paint before applying it to canvas. This method forces the viewer's eye to slow down and carefully read the canvas. He also frequently makes use of laying to create an effect of visual prominence in certain spots. Herrera has painted in many styles over the course of his almost forty year artistic career, but he prefers to paint in abstract styles.

Mr. Herrera visited various art classes during his time at Providence Day to teach students about his distinct style. This distinction is based on his skill in many

different disciplines such as engraving and screen printing, which he believes gives his work depth. Having a talented artist like Fabio Herrera on campus was an incredible opportunity.
