THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 3 May 2019 CCC Board changes nomination process F E AT U R E D LI ST I N G 32935 32395 SW Arbor Lake Dr. $499,000 ■ Charbonneau community allowed to vote on board candidates By CLARA HOWELL, THE VILLAGER C harbonneau Country Club Board members recently announced a change in the board nomination pro- cess this election season. Residents can now vote on which CCC Board candidates they will see on the ballot. The CCC Board consists of nine members, and because the three-year term limits are staggered, three seats open up every year. In past elections, a Nominating Committee was appointed by the CCC Board president. The committee, which consisted of a board member, a member of the community and the past president of the CCC Board, selected which three candidates would be on the ballot. “The CCC Board decided to include all candidates submitting applications instead of limiting the ballot to the number of vacancies. This option now places the decision as to who serves on the Board in the hands of the voters as opposed to having a select Nominating Committee make the decision,” said CCC Board President Kathy Harp. In the past, candidates who were not selected to be on the ballot or for those who missed deadline, could submit materials to the Secretary of the Board and collect about five signatures from homeowners who are eligible to vote, to qualify. Although, CCC Board Vice President Bob Harland said it’s rare to see someone do that. “If you’re sort of rejected or passed over, you’re not going to do that,” he said. “This second phase of applying to be on the ballot with five homeowner signatures may change in the future,” Harp added. “We may streamline the process by staying with only one deadline.” Though this May there are only three candidates running for the three open seats, Harland and other board members hope the change will make the selection process more fair in the future. “They (the Nominating Committee) will shift their focus to providing the candidates with information on the current issues, projects, workload, and the importance of understanding the Board governance,” Harp said, adding that at the April CCC Board meeting, the Nominating Committee stated they strongly agreed with the Board decision to change the process. “They recommended that the Nominating Committee be given the job of recruiting and educating new candidates during the entire year, not just a few months prior to elections.” The recent creation of a Board Development Committee would absorb some of the roles of the Nominating Committee, which would likely become a sub committee of the Board Development Committee, said Harp. ■ What to watch out for on your 2019 ballot would increase from .49 to .99 per thousand of the assessed value.
