THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 27 May 2019 WilsonvilleSTAGE By CLAIRE GREEN, FOR THE VILLAGER Shakespeare, but funnier After taking the winter season off, community theater group WilsonvilleSTAGE is back for eight shows with the uproariously irreverent comedy “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised],” directed by Rick Hoover. Following three friends spontaneously trying to run through the entire works of Shakespeare in one go, the attempt is hilariously doomed from the start with mishaps throughout. But the friends are undeterred by their lack of skill and plunge on, head first, Monty Python style. The three men kick off the play by introducing themselves by their real names, giving the show a personal flair as they continuously interact with the audience. The high-energy show also keeps its actors on their toes, moving at a furious pace through 37 Shakespeare pieces, excluding Hamlet. “You could lose seven or eight pounds with this show,” WilsonvilleSTAGE President David Niklas said. “It’s an aerobics class every night.” Having run for more than 20 years, Director Rick Hoover said the play struck a chord with him because of its humor and approachability. “It’s basically three guys who get together who try to do this,” Hoover said. “They have a lot of excitement to try, but maybe not all the talent.” For those only with a vague knowledge of Shakespeare, most of his works were penned in iambic pentameter — a style of poetry or verse based on the number and emphasis placed on syllables in a sentence. Hoover said that reading Shakespeare can be an undertaking that has tainted Shakespeare for many. “I remember my daughter was in high school and they read ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and she and this other girl were the only ones who read it properly. Everyone else read it like, duh, duh, duh, duh,” Hoover said with a laugh. “She said, ‘No! Read it as a sentence.’” But unlike the usually lofty, high- theatre productions that audiences are used to seeing, the show is constructed to parody the seriousness and language of Shakespeare’s works. “This show is for people especially who don’t understand or don’t like Shakespeare,” Hoover said. “Although they actually use the dialogue from the original Shakespeare scripts — well, they do embellish it at points — it’s all for laughs.” Come see the madness unfold at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, and Sunday, May 26, for a matinee at 2:30 p.m. For tickets and more information go to wilsonvillestage.org. ■ ADVERTISE IN THE VILLAGER!
