To the Editor :
The issue of aircraft traffic flows to and from the Aurora State airport continues to generate much interest . As a retired air traffic controller with over seventeen years of service at PDX , I would like to share my thoughts regarding the situation .
The fair weather / summertime takeoff and landing direction at Aurora is to the north , while the rainy season / wintertime flow is to the south . The wind at the airport is a big factor as pilots prefer landing and departing into a headwind for safety considerations .
When aircraft depart to the north the standard procedure is to turn left or right leaving 700 to 1000 feet after takeoff . Depending on aircraft performance , this should usually be accomplished prior to reaching Charbonneau . For airplanes landing to the south , however , noise over Charbonneau could become a bigger issue . If an aircraft is executing an instrument approach , as in bad weather , the pilot is required to be established on a straight-in flight path at least eight miles from the airport . That

The Lifeflight air ambulance network has a base at Aurora State , and I frequently hear their helicopters and fixed-wing PC12 turboprop aircraft flying overhead , especially at night . The control tower there is closed during the overnight hours . A reminder may be appropriate to Lifeflight that our area is noisesensitive and avoidance would be appreciated , weather permitting , unless that particular flight is on a priority mission .
My perspective as a Charbonneau resident ? I ’ ve had a lifetime interest in aviation and enjoy watching airplanes . An added bonus during the summer air show season is that one can spot some interesting and unusual aircraft flying in and out of Aurora State .
