Volume 2 , Issue 3 2013

Letter from the Director

Finally , it looks like 2013 might have a summer , after all . Winter seemed to drag on forever , but it is warming up now , the kids are out of school and people are making plans for summer activities . If you usually take some type of vacation but are looking for money to save in your CASH account , a staycation might be something you want to consider .
Staycations are a popular alternative to the normal vacation and it can be much less expensive , involves less hassle and is usually more relaxing . Not sure what to do ? Perhaps try one of these ideas …. Explore Your City or one nearby – Seek out historic sites , museums , and restaurants where you have never eaten before . Kansas communities are full of interesting places to visit . Set Up a Scavenger Hunt – Scavengers hunts require little money ; they only take some planning . Children love heading out with their list ( and parental supervision , if necessary ) to find the items on their list . Have a prize for the winning team and the competition is on . Hit the Beach – Kansas also has a number of very nice lakes that are perfect for swimming , picnicking , and camping .
The staycation possibilities are endless . For other ideas , check out one of these websites : www . travelks . com / ThingsToDo or kansastravel . org / kansastravel . htm . A great place to start is www . Kansas . com / Kansas105 which gives at least one fun thing to do in each and every Kansas county !
No matter what you do , a staycation is a time for relaxing and being together as a family . Unplug from the TV , the Internet and even your cellphone to have fun and enjoy time with those you love . And , while you are on your staycation , take a picture and enter the STAYCATION CONTEST .
Through education and asset building , the Creating Assets , Savings , and Hope Program empowers low to moderate income households to achieve financial self-sufficiency by teaching new habits of financial responsibility .
