For full story turn to Page 3 NEWS ‘Sextortion’ exists even in judges’ chambers: Justice FILIPINO DELEGATE AT WOMEN JUDGES’ CONFERENCE EXPOSES THIS SOCIAL MENACE By MARILIE BOMEDIANO A VISITING Filipino judge explained “sextortion” as a social menace in schools, hospitals, police stations ~ even in judges’ chambers. Associate justice Teresita de Castro was speaking at the Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) in conjunction with National Conference of the Australian Association of Women Judges (AAWJ) held in Sydney last month. She defined sextortion as a social menace by a predator who could be a government official, school teacher Justice de Castro explains dynamics of power, control or administrator, supervisor in a governmental or private institution, prosecutor, church official, jail warden, immigration officer, police, health officer, and other persons in authority. Justice de Castro was one of several speakers from different countries, and the only delegate from the Philippines to speak at the conference Many vital topics that concerned humanitarian interests were thoroughly discussed during her presentation. At the start of her presentation, she explained the dynamics of power and control, the abuse of authority to extract from unwilling women, which is the abuse of power for purposes of sexual exploitation. n
