Faculty WWII Veteran Featured
Dr . Anthony DiMango , Senior Vice President , Chief of Dentistry , and Co-Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine , was featured in the NYU Lutheran Medical Center online publication in Fall 2015 . In the article , Dr . DiMango shared why , at age 91 , he continues to dedicate himself to the welfare of his fellow countrymen and to his field of dentistry .
••• Alumna Exemplifies Dedication and Courage in New Guinea
NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine and the Hawaii Region are proud to have contributed to the professional maturation of Dr . Sheena Li . The University of Toronto School of Dentistry graduate completed her NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine AEGD residency in Hawaii and went on to provide dental care in New Guinea through a Christian relief and development organization called Samaritans Purse , which is supported by a local church in Paia , Maui , and her home place of worshiop , Toronto ' s North York Chinese Baptist Church . Dr . Li is now the first long-term and full-time dentist at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital in Papua , New Guinea . The hospital region was recently declared as one of the most violent places on Earth . Tribal warfare and domestic abuse are common strong holds that are witnessed daily at the hospital . Dr . Li and her fellow physicians treat head and neck trauma " by the seat of their pants " almost daily .

Shriner ’ s Hospital for Children — Honolulu Receives Donation
NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine pediatric residents in Hawaii were present at the July 2015 ceremony in which the Hawaii Dental Service Foundation donated $ 42,000 to Shriner ' s Hospital for Children — Honolulu for the purchase of operating room dental equipment . As a result of its affiliation with the NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine Pediatric Dentistry program , this particular Shriner ' s Hospital for Children location is the only one equipped to treat the dental needs of children under general anesthesia .
••• Resident has Great Outreach Experiences
Dr . Mariana McNamara , 2015-2016 AEGD Resident in Pascua Yaqui Tribal Dental Center , Tucson , Arizona tells us , " During my last 3 months at the Pascua Yaqui Dental Clinic , I participated in many outreach programs . The CATCH Program is where I provided basic dental knowledge to children between the ages of 8-12 , and an opportunity for group interactions and answers to questions to improve their daily oral care . And , the Back to School Bash — over two separate weekend events where over 200 children came into the dental clinic and were screened for dental caries and provided oral hygiene instruction ."
Marina was appointed as an ASDOH D4 Mentor conversing about patient cases with dental students and providing guidance about their futures . As part of an MPH Practicum , Mariana was approved for creating an educational program to explain the difference between certain dental treatments provided at the clinic . Research is expected to be completed by January 2017 . An integral participant in the Pascua Yaqui Recognition Day festival , Mariana and her team handed out over 600 toothbrushes to tribal members while enjoying the unique atmosphere to the festivities .
