Dental Education and the Safety Net
This course provided an in depth look the current dental education system , focused on changes in dental delivery system and explored the current role of dental schools in safety net and future scenarios . The presenter was Dr . Howard Bailit , Professor Emeritus in the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care University of Connecticut School of Medicine . Dr . Bailit received his dental degree from Tufts and his Ph . D . from Harvard . He is a widely published on the topic of health policy and serves on many national committees .
All Zirconia Implants , New Implant Design
This course reviewed zirconia implant technology , which is FDA approved for two weeks permanent load , and its many advantages to patients and practitioners . The presenter was Dr . Boris Zats . Dr . Zats completed his degree in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Montefiore Hospital / Albert Einstein School of Dental Medicine . Dr . Zats focused on treatment of well-patients in addition to trauma situations , orthognathic / jaw surgery , pathology and reconstruction at hospitals in the NY area including : Beth Israel , Bronx Lebanon , Jacobi , North Central Bronx and Montefiore Hospitals . In addition , Dr . Zats was in charge of Maxillofacial Trauma for ten years at Lutheran Medical Center ’ s level 1 trauma center .
Silver Diamine Flouride : A Very Promising Tool
This presentation summarized the clinical evidence for silver diamine fluoride ( SDF ), approved by the U . S . Food and Drug Administration in 2014 , as a topical agent to arrest or prevent dental caries . Discussed were the probable mechanisms by which SDF works , the clinical indications for SDF , clinical recommendations for using SDF based on the available scientific literature . The presenter was Dr . Scott Tomar , a public health dentist and oral epidemiologist whose research focuses on understanding and controlling modifiable risk factors for disease in populations . Dr . Tomar currently serves as Chair-elect of the Oral Health Section of the American Public Health Association , the world ’ s largest public health organization , and is a consultant for a number of agencies and organizations , including the Food and Drug Administration and the American Dental Association .
Technology for a Better Training Program / CEREC , How it Can Help Your Clinic : Non-Proft Business Model
This presentation focused on how technology offers multiple advancements for resident training , recruitment , and patient care and explored ways in which community dental programs can take advantage of these opportunities . Special focus was placed on CEREC milling for low-cost crowns and CBCT imaging for guided implant placement for effective patient care . The presenter was Dr . Michael McCracken an Associate Director of the NYU-Lutheran AEGD program and Professor ( part-time ) at the UAB School of Dentistry . After completing dental school at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a prosthodontic residency at University of Alabama at Birmingham , Dr . McCracken received a PhD in biomedical engineering from UAB with an emphasis on biomaterials . He currently maintains an active research program within the university and directs multiple CE programs focused on prosthodontics and implant dentistry . He lectures internationally on dental implants and complex oral rehabilitation .
Introduction to Motivational Interviewing ( Resident and Patient Behavior )
This presentation demonstrated the benefits of using motivational interviewing ( MI ) as a framework for patientfamily-centered care and provided the audience with the opportunity to observe and practice basis MI skills . The presenter was Dr . Sylvie Naar , a pediatric health psychologist who researches health disparities with minority youth and evaluates and develops interventions to improve health behaviors in adolescents . Dr . Naar is a national and international expert on MI with particular emphasis on adolescents and young adults and worked closely with the developers of MI ( Miller and Rollnick ) to author the first textbook focusing on this population for Guilford Press ’ Motivational Interviewing series . Recently , Dr . Naar received funding to provide and evaluate MI training for outreach workers in a HRSA / CDC / NIH collaborative to improve youth linkage to HIV care .
