ACCOMPLISHMENTS AWARDS & HONORS NYU Langone Dental Faculty, Residents and Staff Are Making an Extraordinary Impact Around the World Extraordinary Achievements and Contributions Welcome DPH Residents! New DPH (Dental Public Health) residents, class of 2017- 2018, had their orientation in Brooklyn Oct. 20-21, 2017. There are 7 residents in the class: 2 in Brooklyn; 2 in Lynn, Massachusetts; 2 in Florida, and 1 in Chicago. In the photo, the residents are joined by their faculty advisors. ••• Endo Resident Michel Featured on Airforce News Dr. Stanley Michel, current Endodontic Program resident, was featured on the Airforce News while being stationed at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, NY in January 2017. On any given drill weekend, Dr. Michel provides dental exams to nearly 100 patients. Following this drill weekend, Dr. Michel headed to Haiti to complete a medical mission sponsored by the Nationwide Wesleyan Church. The full video may be viewed here: https://www.dvidshub.net/ video/504930/dentist ••• New York Area Endodontic Residents Attend Lecture with Internationally Recognized Expert Clifford Ruddle The six Endodontic residents in Brooklyn joined endodontic residents from across the greater New York area to participate in a course offered by Clifford J. Ruddle, DDS, FACD, FICD, on factors that influence success in endodontics. Dr. Ruddle is a leading expert in all aspects of clinical endodontics and created the world’s first microendodontic training center in 1989. ••• Visiting Professor from Japan Meets with Dental Anesthesia Residents Dr. Kenji Seo, a visiting professor in dental anesthesia from Niigata University in Japan, observed the NYU Langone Hospitals-Dental Anesthesiology Program and gave a lecture describing the training programs and practice of Dental Anesthesiology in Japan. Dr. John “Russell” Yancey, a Japanese speaking, current dental anesthesia resident was able to host Dr. Seo during his stay while he shadowed different aspects of the NYU Langone Anesthesia program, Sept. 18-21, 2017. The question and answer session that followed Dr. Seo’s presentation highlighted many differences between the Japanese and American health science education and health care systems regarding dentistry, medicine, and their intersection within dental anesthesiology. Dr. Seo announced that the International Federation of Dental Anesthesia Societies (IFDAS) is holding its triennial meeting in 2018 in Japan and he invited all of his new friends and colleagues to attend the meeting. ••• 20 NYU Langone Hospitals Postdoctoral Dental Residency Program Four Team Members Newly Board Certified Endodontic residency program graduates Dr. Matthew Phillips, 2011 graduate and Dr. Farshad Seyedein, 2014 graduate recently passed the third part of their board exams and are now Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics. The exam consists of a four hour written exam, a three-part oral exam, and submission of ten cases. It is a grueling process and attaining this goal attests to their knowledge and skill. Two other members of the Dental Medicine team passed their boards and are now Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry: Pediatric Dental attending Dr. Ninus Ebrahimi and Dental School Health provider and Pediatric Dentistry 2016 graduate, Dr. Mal Azar. Congratulations to all! ••• Goldstein Recognized for Work with Special Needs Patients Congratulations to Dr. Gary Goldstein, AEGD Associate Director, for continuing to work to improve health care for persons with disabilities in NYS. Dr. Goldstein serves on the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities Commissioners Advisory Council and Chairs the Subcommittee on Health. The mission of the subcommittee is to make recommendations for meaningful improvements in the behavioral, medical and dental health of people with disabilities while stressing the importance of providing these services in the most integrated community setting that is appropriate. Dr. Goldstein also serves as a Clinical Director for the Special Smiles Special Olympics program. ••• Rinaudos Participate in ICD Convocation Dr. Philip Rinaudo, Director of Graduate Education, NYU Langone Hospitals Postdoctoral Dental Residency Program and his wife, Paula, both volunteer for the International College of Dentists (ICD) US A Section. Paula was inducted as an honorary member at the ICD Annual Meeting and Convocation held in Atlanta, GA, Oct. 16-19, 2017 and served as the meeting planner. Dr. Rinaudo is a member of the Convocation Committee. He was inducted as an ICD member in 2005. Photo of Paula, daughter Ashlie, and Dr. Rinaudo. ••• Stillwell Inducted into ICD Dr. David Stillwell, AEGD Senior Associate Director, Southeastern Zone, was inducted into the International College of Dentists (ICD) USA Section by President Dr. Chuck Smith at the ICD Annual Meeting and Convocation held in Atlanta, GA, Oct. 16-19, 2017. ••• Endodontic Faculty Member Awarded Congratulations to Dr. Maria Maranga, Endodontic Program faculty member, for receiving two awards in 2017: the Dr. Bernard Tillis Award for a literary piece in a state journal and the Robert Raskin Meritorious Service award from the Suffolk County Dental Society. Dr. Maranga was also named Top 25 Women in Dentistry by Dental Products magazine, received the Presidential Citation from the Long Island Academy of Odontology, and the Scrubs and Stilettos Leadership in Dentistry Award. ••• Issue 8 Journal 1 November 2017 21
