The program’s staff of pediatric dentists, general dentists, dental assistants and registered dental 26,000 CHILD DENTAL VISITS ANUALLY hygienists complete over 26,000 child dental visits annually, rotating between schools based upon need. “Every school day our staff is inside eight or nine New York City schools providing health education, preventative services, and restorative services to student patients. We also employ outreach workers who conduct workshops and provide educational materials at community events. It’s really a wonderful program,” said Dr. Lynn Gargano, who has served as Director of Dental School Health since 2012 and completed both General Practice and Pediatric Dentistry residencies with NYU Langone Hospitals Postdoctoral Dental Residency Program after receiving her degree in dental medicine from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1990. “We’re keeping the kids in school and we’re teaching them early on that preventing decay is the best. Children who may have originally come in with eight cavities are now in such good oral health that they only need to come in every six months for a checkup and cleaning. It’s very rewarding for me and my staff,” said Dr. Gargano. Issue 8 Journal 1 November 2017 ••• 17
