Several groups of students took the monthly character trait, Compassion, to a whole new level.

First grade students created Thanksgiving menus and then volunteered to bring in food items from the menu to donate to families in need. To reward students for good behavior, each of the first grade teachers bought a turkey to include in the donations. The students and staff were able to provide three complete Thanksgiving dinners for three families in the Weston area. Members from the Weston Masonic Lodge picked up the donated items and delivered them to the families.

The Character Council challenged each class to bring loose change or dollar bills to donate to Pennies for Patients. Pennies for Patients benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our students worked for a three week period with their classmates, community and families to raise money to fight cancer. Our school raised a total of $601.00!

Third grade students used profits from their Regional Economics Carnival in December to support Wayside Waifs. The kids were given a budget and a region of the United States to base their carnival game and products from. They searched for products and items they thought would sell the best and games they thought children would like to play. Children in

grades K-4 were invited to bring money and participate in the carnival.

The third graders turned out to be very good business owners and they sold all of their products! Each booth made enough money to pay back their loan and have a nice profit! The students donated their profit to Wayside Waifs because of their love for animals.

Ms. Parsons' sixth grade class held a "Giving Project" from December 8th—15th. Students collected items for the Veterans Hospital in Leavenworth and for Wayside Waifs, in Kansas City. The students created flyers to hang in the school building and also wrote postings for the school's website and Facebook page.  In the flyers, you could read about the organizations the students had chosen and what the needs were for each organization.

Once the donations were collected, Ms. Parsons' class dropped off two tubs of items to the Leavenworth Veterans Hospital which contained hygiene products, individual snacks and t-shirts; and they delivered a large tub of items to Wayside Waifs which contained numerous types of animal treats, pet toys and food for the animals at the shelter. Both groups were very appreciative of the items.

West Platte students were grateful to live in such a supportive and kind school community that support others in the area.
