Please Note: our walks on 23rd April, &
21st May, are on Saturdays
By membership ‘request’ we now have
a couple of Saturday walks included
in our Programme, and, some summer
evening walks in June and July - Take a
look at the website!
At the time you read this we shall also
have held our AGM at which there is
programmed a talk on the Bishop’s
Stortford Southern Country Park. This
new park runs alongside St James
Way and is a really brilliant area for
the shorter walk at only 3.66 Km and
where you don’t really meet mud. The
Car Park is situated on Thorley Lane
East, so do not turn into Church Lane.
There is also road-side parking at Moor
Hall Lane, off St James Way. Sorry, no
Sat nav. post-codes for either. Well we
have had some really muddy walks
through January, February and early
March, so really brilliantly well done
everyone for ‘keeping-up’.
Quite a varied selection of walks
are offered in the next two months
starting next to the canalised River
Stort at Twyford Lock, and then later
in April commencing at Rickling Green
- which has a very handy pub after
the walk is over and then in May we
head off to Bury Green - How many
BSDFA members can you get inside
a telephone kiosk? We finalise May
at Tesco’s in order for you to have a
handy after-walk shopping experience!
Enjoy your boots, and Very Best Wishes,

Back in June 2015 Herts & Essex
received a Stonewall School Champions
Bronze Award in recognition of the
school’s work in promoting equality
and raising awareness of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues.
At the time of receiving the award
Stonewall congratulated the school on
the work that staff and students have
done so far in eradicating homophobia
and championing equality, as well as the
work to demonstrate why homophobia
is unacceptable in school and the wider
community.
In continuing this awareness, Herts &
Essex celebrated LGBT History Month
during February with a series of events
and talks focussing on gender issues
and discrimination. The school was
decorated with rainbow flags and its
Equalities Group led themed assemblies
for all year groups. The pledge wall
featured pledges from students and
staff which challenge attitudes of

Bishops Stortford U3A Group
At the Bishops Stortford U3A Group
Co-ordinators’ Meeting in October it
was suggested that we should improve
the knowledge of First Aid in our Group
Leaders. From this suggestion grew the
first of two First Aid Training Courses
the first held in February this year and
taken by Mr. Roy Edwards. The second
is due to take place in June. The idea
of the course was generally received
with enthusiasm, even though some
members wondered if their knees and
backs would allow the practice of CPR.
For most many years had passed since
four hours of intense concentration had
been needed but everyone responded
well. Questions, responses and practices
were all attempted with enthusiasm and
a high standard of understanding and
14
competence achieved.Topics covered
included, assessment of an incident
and the casualty, dealing with an
unconscious casualty, CPR, heart attack,
choking, shock, wounds and bleeding.
During a light lunch there was a “buzz”
of discussion and interest and the course
finished promptly at 4:00 when the
organisers thanked Roy Edwards for
a very informative and enjoyable day
and participants were given a concise
manual to re-inforce what they had
learned. Although we all hope that we
will not need to use our newly acquired
knowledge and skills we left feeling
more confident should the need arise.

discrimination. Students from each of
the five school houses took part in a
hotly contested cake competition; profits
from the subsequent cake sale as well as
those from the sale of rainbow lanyards
went to Gendered Intelligence, the
charity that works to support people in
the trans community.
Included in the programme of events
was a visit from Caroline Paige, the first
transgender officer to serve openly in
the UK Armed Forces. Students at Herts
& Essex listened to her fascinating,
inspiring and enlightening story, one
that included many obstacles and
much discrimination. Caroline’s role as
a trailblazer, positive role-model and
champion of diversity in the UK Armed
Forces, and now as part of the Stonewall
School Role Models programme, has
earned her a valuable pla
