May was an
important month for
the WI in Bishop’s
Stortford, we
celebrated our 7th
birthday, elected a new committee and
president to serve for the next year
and instructed our delegate on how
she should vote on the resolution that
has been chosen for debate to the
National Annual Meeting.
During the last 100 years the
campaigns that have followed
resolutions passed at WI Annual
Meetings have greatly infl uenced
society; in recent years these have
included avoiding food waste,
conquering loneliness and highlighting
the pollution caused by “plastic soup”.
This year’s resolution proposed that
“mental health matters as much as
physical health”. It urges members
to recognise the importance of
giving each equal parity by making it
acceptable to talk openly about mental
as well as physical health issues and
by lobbying the government for better
support for mental illness. At the
national meeting in June it was passed
with 98% of the vote – now the
campaigning will start.
At our June meeting Philip Ian Wright,
a hatter from Luton spoke about the
“World of Hats”, bringing along some
of his wonderful creations to illustrate
his talk. For July we have invited
Chris Lydamore, Rhodes Museum. His
talk “Cooking in the Roman Style”
will look at life here when Bishop’s
Stortford was part of the Roman
Empire.
BSWI meets monthly (1st Thursday)
in The Charis Centre at 7.30 pm.

consecutive annual charity golf day
organised by the Rotary Club of Bishop’s
Stortford. A total of 21 teams of four
took part at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club
and the day proved to be both enjoyable
and fi nancially successful.
After an excellent dinner at the Golf
Club in the evening, Hugo Richardson
of Weldon Beasley conducted a Charity
Auction. Afterwards, the Guest Speaker
Sandy Jones former Chief Executive of
the Professional Golfers Association and
now President of the Golf Foundation
gave a very witty and informative
speech. In particular he provided many
