I ’ m sitting here writing this anticipating the cooler weather headed our way . I heard we had almost forty days of 90-plus degree weather this summer . Fall is always a nice break from the heat and humidity , but I ’ m not looking forward to the really cold days ahead . I hope the trees are beautiful this year when the leaves change .
I attended a fund raiser at Milroy , Indiana for Homes For Our Troops on Sept . 16 . I first had to fold a flag at a military funeral in Moores Hill , and then Ron Spurlock and I hurried up to Milroy for the function to help raise money for Homes For Our Troops to build handicappedaccessible homes for our

With the holiday season being right around the corner , plenty of great events are coming up in the Sunman area . Happy fall !
A special shout out to Clarence ( Bud ) Ritzi and Darlene ( Billman ) who were married on Sept . 7 , 1963 , at St . Nicholas Catholic Church in Sunman . Sylvester Riehle and Ruth Effing were also married in 1963 on Sept . 14 at St Ann ’ s in Hamburg , IN . Happy anniversary to both couples !
Grandparents Day 2018 was a great success for St . Nicholas School . The church was packed

O ur combat wounded warriors . Brett Bondurant received one of these beautiful homes and is one of the four recipients here in Indiana . Rep . Randy Frye and Celeste Calvitto invited us to come and help represent our veterans and Brett Bondurant , who was in Kentucky at another function . Governor Eric Holcomb attended the event to thank everybody for their support . I always encourage people to donate to Homes For Our Troops because over ninety percent of the money donated goes to building these homes . I personally know what a huge difference this home has made in the life of Brett Bondurant and his family .

I recently presented a photo to Bush White of him and Governor Holcomb , taken during the flood at Aurora this year and signed by the governor . Bush , thanks for making 6.6 million Hoosiers happy . Mr . White is a World War II Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient , and still very active . He has the photo on display at his residence and I ’ m
as welcomed grandparents and visitors were welcomed with a special mass . Under the guidance of Mr . Keck , students sang to grandparents . The performance was followed by a donut reception and a tour of the classrooms .
St . Nicholas students also recently held a school service project to collect items for their Haiti Mission . Over eight hundred fifty items were collected .
Congratulations to Kim Carr for receiving the Community Involvement Award from the American Legion this past month . Thank you , Ms . Carr ,

sure he ’ s showing it around at the restaurants he visits .
The Catfish Tourney was a huge success . Even though it rained that day , participants caught a lot of fish- some big ones too . Team Krause from Brookville caught the biggest fish weighing in at 50.4 pounds , and that paid $ 5,150 . But the big money of $ 10,000 went to the first place Team Schmeltz from Bloomingdale , IN . They caught a total of 121.4 pounds of catfish . They came close to catching the biggest fish of the event with a 49.4-pound fish that just barely lost out to the winner . A total of 3,996 pounds of catfish were caught that day , almost two tons worth . The total money paid was $ 33,750 , and that made a lot of people very happy .
Director Frank McIntosh is stepping down after heading this tournament for thirteen years . He did an outstanding job and deserves a big pat on the back for all his hard work and dedication . Steve Hannan will be taking over for him . Thanks to Mayor Brent Bascom and the City of Rising
St . Nicholas students with the items they collected for the Haiti Mission .

Sun , the many sponsors , and the people of Rising Sun for their outstanding support .
Congratulations to Friendship Bank on their 20th anniversary in Rising Sun .
The news about the new river port proposed to be built at the old AEP Power Plant site is very encouraging . This will make a substantial contribution to our area with so many jobs and benefits . It will take years to develop , but once it gets started , we will have a lot of quality jobs coming to our local area .
Congratulations to Caleb Valentine for being awarded the $ 5000 Scholarship from the Ohio County Community Foundation Board of Directors . Caleb is one fine young man and an Eagle Scout . The Doc Beckett scholarship of $ 500 was awarded to Trevor Levi . Doc was the longtime friend of Captain Bill McClure , and we enjoyed stopping in to visit Doc at his office . Captain Bill would always remember his birthday with a cake . I know they are enjoying each other in heaven .
We are all still waiting for the Ohio River to clear up so we can start using the ferry boat . I ’ m planning on taking the grandkids on it . I ’ ve had them on the Anderson Ferry several times . The ferry will be a welcome addition and make it possible for a quick trip to Kentucky .
I was honored to be able to help with the Wall That Heals at Baylor Trucking Sept . 5-9 . Cari Baylor brought this tribute wall to the area in honor of her grandpa , Chester , and dad , Bob- both veterans . I was at the escort when it left
Dearborn County Fairgrounds , helped set it up , and assisted in disassembling it . Many veterans and their families attended and the program at the Wall . Seeing some of the schools bring the students to see it and experience this wall was nice . Hopefully , someday they can visit the real Wall in Washington , DC . I always encourage students to go on their school trip to Washington to see all of the memorials and monuments . A special thanks to my cousin , Jim McDaniel , for helping to rescue the boat docks that broke loose during the heavy rain . Jim is always there to help when needed .
Veterans Day is November 11 which is on a Sunday this year . I know Lawrenceburg is holding their service that day at the courthouse . We will have our Color Guard there from the KWVA and Vietnam Veterans .
Rising Sun High School and Middle School will have their program on Nov . 12 . I will be giving the speech in Aurora at South Dearborn Middle School . I love to talk with the students and make sure they know where their freedoms come from and why they are living the American Dream . Take the time to attend one of the Veterans Day programs and show some respect to those who have given so much to our nation . Be sure to Thank A Veteran . They will appreciate it . I will never forget Lary Fogle and Tommy Denning , my two classmates from LHS , who died in Vietnam .
May God Bless all of you and our great nation .
