Our family group was discussing how quickly the summer has gone ( it seems we have this same observation each year ). We realized that school will begin in our local district in just 22 days . Of course , I realize that some of the Indiana school districts are beginning fall sessions even sooner . For any family with students , it means that the slower days are giving way to rapid paces . This month I ’ m providing two recipes that are often requested from past issues . The breakfast
Summer is here ! Need extra money for vacation ? Join the Advantage Home Care Team . casserole is quick to prepare ; even though the apple pie bars seem complicated , they are also quick and yield enough for multitudes of eaters .
This breakfast casserole is one that our family has enjoyed for years . A half a recipe yields four portions . I bake the half recipe in a 1-quart casserole or a pie plate . Leftovers are tasty when refrigerated for 2 or 3 days .
Breakfast Casserole 1 ½ cups frozen country-style hash brown potatoes 1 cup fully cooked ham , chopped coarsely 3 / 4 cup grated cheese ( I like cheddar or smoked gouda ) 5 eggs 1 1 / 3 cups heavy cream 2 tablespoons chopped green onions ( use green part )
½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper Butter or margarine for greasing casserole
Preheat oven to 375 °. Defrost potatoes by placing in colander and running water over , then draining well . Butter casserole , then place potatoes into bottom and evenly distribute across the bottom . Place into oven and bake for about 8-10 minutes to briefly cook and brown very slightly . Remove from oven .
Sprinkle ham over potatoes then spread grated cheese over ham . Whisk eggs and cream , then add green onions and salt and pepper . Pour over cheese-ham mixture . Bake for 35-40 minutes or until set in center .
I made these apple pie bars for our block party last fall , and they were a real hit . Unfortunately , there weren ’ t any leftovers to take home .

Reducing Damage and Disease in the Home Garden
For the home gardener , this time of year can be a seemingly endless onslaught of insect damage , disease , and other pains . With cucurbits ( such as cucumber and squash ) powdery mildew and several varieties of beetles are a common nuisance . Other plants like roses and tomatoes face routine threats from a wide range of both fungal and bacterial blight . In short , no plants are safe ! Best practices for reducing damage and disease in the garden will be the topic of today ’ s article .
Let ’ s take a quick step back to biology class . For today we are focusing on biotic stresses of plants . However , when diagnosing plant problems , we must first remember that plants face both biotic and abiotic stresses .
Biotic stresses are those from living things ( pests , disease , etc .). Abiotic stresses are those from non-living threats ( weather , soil pH ,

chemicals ). It ’ s not always easy to distinguish between the two , but the ability to do so is often critical . If you are unsure about a plant problem , dig into the reliable research sources ( extension , USDA , universities , etc .) or feel free to give me or even your local garden care center a call .
When considering how to manage pests and disease in your garden , there are many things to keep in mind . Perhaps most importantly , consider your site . If you select an improper site for your plants , they will be more susceptible to pest and disease damage . A great example of this is blue spruce trees . These trees are wholly unfit for our climate , so they become a casualty at the hands of fungal disorders and spider mites . Other considerations to keep in mind are the availability of nutrients , beneficial insect populations , irrigation , and pruning .
If a plant ’ s problems are severe enough to warrant control , be sure to weigh your options , and that starts with setting an action threshold . I ’ ve talked about this in previous articles regarding Integrated Pest Management , and it applies just as well for plant diseases . Cultural practices such as weeding , watering , fertilizing , and tillage may be helpful for addressing the cause of pests and disease . Encouraging growth of beneficial insect populations is another tool in the gardener ’ s shed . Beware of overusing pesticides that may reduce these populations . If the problem is severe enough , pesticides and herbicides may be a

well-floured surface , roll ½ dough to form a 17x12-inch rectangle . Fold into thirds and place into a 10x15-inch baking sheet .
Sprinkle cornflakes onto the top of dough . Place apple slices over cornflakes . Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle onto sliced apples . Roll remaining dough to an 11 x 16-inch rectangle and place onto apples . Crimp edges . Bake at 375 ° for 50 minutes . Place foil around edges of crust to prevent overbrowning . Remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool about 10-15 minutes .

great option , if used correctly . Be sure to read all labels carefully and apply with caution . When it comes to plant damage and disease , no one is safe . Understanding proper management for the plants you put in your garden or landscape is critical . Caring for a Japanese maple will be considerably different than caring for raspberries . Keeping these differences in mind will make you a better gardener . In the end , many plant issues require little action .
For those seeking to hone their gardening skills , my office is offering a Master Gardener class in September . Completing the course is a great accomplishment and will undoubtedly increase your gardening knowledge ! Give us a call for information . The deadline is September 1 .
