Southeast Indiana is fortunate to have an Amateur radio club that maintains three repeaters in the Lawrenceburg , IN area . A repeater is an electronic device that receives a low-level amateur radio signal and re-transmits it at a higher level to allow the signal to cover longer distances without degradation .
One rarely sees the club , but rest assured that they are at all of the more significant functions and catastrophic events keeping the lines of communication open to maintain the safety of our residents .
The Laughery Valley Amateur Radio Club ( ARC ) is a separate organization from RACES , a nonprofit organization that works hand-in-hand with Dearborn County Emergency Management . However , most members of ARC are also members of RACES . Any local licensed radio operator is welcome to become a member . They man a Mobile Command truck for field use in the event of an emergency or disaster .
Both ARC and RACES participated in the recent Field Day of North America . Over forty thousand radio operators throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations to demonstrate what they do and the science and skills required .
The event combines public service , emergency preparedness , community outreach , and technical skills during the event . Field Day was first established in 1933 and remains the most popular event in ham radio . The groups use the event as training designed to ensure all equipment is working correctly and that members are well-versed in using it . At the same time , radio operators around the country were reaching out to each other in hopes of connecting with fellow operators across the nation .
ARC is a nonprofit organization that survives through volunteerism , grants , and

donations . The members are “ Skywarn ” certified which means that they are trained in assessing severe weather threats and communicating with the Cincinnati severe weather center . The members keep communities safe through timely and accurate reports of severe and hazardous weather .
“ Amateur radio is a fascinating hobby with many opportunities for emergency service and contribution to the community , said Jeff Braun , ARC member .
Both groups are dedicated to monitoring threats to the public including weather and the health and welfare of the community . For example , at the Bright Parade , ARC sets up and maintains communication channels not only for parade organizers to keep everything running smoothly , but also to handle any medical emergencies or breakdowns that might potentially occur along the parade route .
ARC and RACES also work as a communications hub for fire departments , emergency medical services , and dispatchers during emergencies . Their expertise mixes technology , and community service .
