lost a loved one to cancer speaks about the impact it ’ s had on his or her life .
Katelin McClure was honored to be chosen as this year ’ s speaker during the opening ceremony at the Ripley County Relay for Life event . Katelin ’ s father , Mark McClure , lost his battle to cancer in May 2016 .
During her speech , Katelin said , “ There are very few things that I genuinely hate in this world – I hate the Pittsburgh Steelers , I hate when my dog jumps in our pond just minutes after giving him a bath , but the thing I hate more than anything is cancer . Cancer does not define us … and whether you are here as a survivor or here in memory of someone you ’ ve lost to this horrific disease , we must continue to fight in every way possible . I am proud to represent my father and celebrate with the survivors .”
The descendants of Frank and Helena Kuebel recently gathered at St . Martin Hall in Yorkville for a family reunion . More than one hundred fifty people from as far away as Phoenix , Arizona attended . Following a time for reminiscing , a pitch-in meal featuring the famous Kuebel family fried chicken was enjoyed by all . The evening was capped off by a hayride to the Kuebel homestead . In attendance were several generations of the Trossman , McCarty , Phillips , Lipps , Hoffmeier , and Roman and Mary Kuebel families .
Several Yorkville 4-H members ’ hard work paid off at this year ’ s Dearborn County Fair . Each of Darren and Teresa Callahan ’ s three children had something to be proud of . The Harrison City Council has officially adopted the Comprehensive Plan that has been well discussed for over the last year . Input on what will make this growing town successful was given by residents , business owners , churches , school districts , and countless other organizations . The Harrison City Council has been encouraging input from residents with drafts of the plan continually being accessible . Both council and staff will prioritize the recommendations later this summer that will impact our city for over the next fifteen years .
The Economic Development Department listed multiple growth opportunities in the official activity report . Duke Energy is finalizing plans for the construction of a new 100,000 square-foot engineering center which will initially employ up to one hundred twenty associates . Skally ’ s Old World Bakery purchased ninety-five acres last year and is currently working on plans for a 345,000 square-foot bakery that could employ as many as two hundred within five years . Several other companies and their locations are listed in the plan . Renovations of our current standing companies can already be seen when driving down New Haven Road .

the flip side , the cultural scene in Harrison is only moving forward ! The State of Ohio granted Harrison ’ s Historic Downtown status as an “ Entertainment District .” Up to twelve liquor licenses may become accessible to all of the promising prospects . A craft beer and wine bistro will be establishing itself at 108 Harrison Avenue , which is currently the location of an old bank building . An existing OTR owner is planning to open a family-friendly restaurant and bar in early 2019 . Fourteen benches and new garbage cans for the District are being installed thanks to a Beautification Grant from Duke Energy . The city is also collaborating with a consulting firm to complete the new design standards .
Be ready to witness changes coming to Harrison . Just this past week , we visited a farmer ’ s market full of creative booths and a rocking concert in the park . But still , in the family calendar , we have the “ long-standing ” traditions circled . It is where the old and new are diverging creating a delicate balance . And this is precisely why so many people respect and love our town !
