Legendary Football Coach Dick Meador Dies at 83
Many wish to leave this world a better place by what they have given to it during one ’ s lifetime . Without a doubt , one man who was able to do this in the Lawrenceburg community was Dick Meador . Meador died on June 24 at the age of 83 but will long be remembered as a family member , friend , teacher , coach , mentor , and confidant to so many that his life touched .
Dick Meador served his country in the US Army before embarking on a teaching and coaching career that would eventually lead him to Lawrenceburg . Meador was a longtime teacher in the Lawrenceburg school system and led the Lawrenceburg High School football program for twelve years .
His legacy and success on the field is matched by few others . He was able to lead the program to two state championship titles in 1975 and 1978 . Over the course of a 21-year coaching career at

four schools , Meador amassed a record of 137-20-2 . Certainly his success with the Lawrenceburg program is one to be heralded . Besides the two state titles under his guidance , the Tigers also had a state runner-up , won 11 of 12 EIAC titles while he was head coach , had 8 undefeated regular seasons , and strung together a 59-game regular season winning streak .
Meador was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1989 . In addition , on September 28 , 2012 , the Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation added his name to the stadium in which his teams played . It continues to be known as Dick Meador Stadium : Home of Neary Field .
It can best be said that his success on the field is one that is rivaled by few , but this man also carried with him a dignity for others that was easily recognizable . I was introduced to him several years ago by my coaching colleague , George Gardner , and had the privilege to speak with Coach Meador many times through the years whether over a meal or just in passing .
Coach Gardner , the longtime head coach of the successful wrestling program at South Dearborn , has readily attributed his success and efforts to the influence of Coach Meador and others on his football staff who gave so much as part of the Lawrenceburg football program to shape and mold so many young men in that community . Undoubtedly , many others could offer similar stories and tribute to this man .
I did not have the privilege to have this man as my coach and mentor , but I am glad I was able to know him in my lifetime . Coach Meador will long be remembered for his coaching accolades , but I dare say that his legacy will live on longer in the men he coached and the impact he had on a community over the course of many years of life due to his genuine demeanor as a human being .
IHSAA Track and Field Season Finishes at State Meet
Several area athletes represented the area in the IHSAA State Track and Field meets hosted on the campus of Indiana University at the Robert C . Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington on June 1 and 2 .
In the girls ’ meet on Friday , South Dearborn sophomore Eva Quinlan finished just shy of the podium in the 300 meter hurdles by placing 10th in a time of 45.15 . Just the week before at the IHSAA Regional , Quinlan became a regional champion in the event by breaking her own school record and running a time of 45.07 . Quinlan was also just shy of advancing to the state meet in the high jump by clearing 5 ’ 2 ” which is the fourth best height in school history .

East Central senior Audrey Griffin , also competing in the 300 hurdles at the state meet , finished right behind Quinlan to place 11th in the state finals in a time of 45.28 . Griffin was also just shy of advancing in two events by placing fourth in the regional in the 110 intermediate hurdles in a time of 15.92 .
South Ripley junior Megan Cole , coming off a regional title of her own the week before at the Shelbyville Regional where she won the 3200 meter run in a time of 11:26.76 , finished 23rd in the state meet in a time of 11:12.59 .
East Central junior Mary Bertke cleared 9 ’ 10 ” in the pole vault at the regional to place 2nd and advance to the state finals . Unfortunately , Bertke did not clear the opening height of 9 ’ 6 ” during the state meet but competed well , nonetheless , to advance to that point .
East Central also advanced two relay teams to the state finals . Their 4x400 meter relay team of Eva Grimm , Taylor Messmore , Emma Fey , and Abby Bittner by placing second at the regional competition running a 4:01.07 . They improved that time at the state meet and placed 11th in a time of 3:57.39 to finish just two spots from the medal stand .
The 4x800 meter relay team finished third at the regional in a time of 9:45.28 to advance . The team consisting of Lily Greiwe , Lauren Greiwe ,

Emma Fey , and Abby Bittner dropped considerable time from the week before and ran a time of 9:36.72 to place 18th at the state meet .
Another area runner , Greensburg freshman Brenner Hanna , placed eighth and earned a place on the podium in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:05.57 . The previous week , Hanna earned a regional title in a time of 5:13.39 . Her teammate , and fellow regional champion by claiming the title in the shot put was junior Lily Grimes with a regional best of 41 ’ 3.5 ”, placed 16th at the state meet with a best put of 37 ’ 11 ”.
Saturday brought out the male athletes to compete in the state meet . Lawrenceburg senior Eyan Peelman , who was the IHSAA Regional champion at Franklin Community High School in the discus throw with a best throw of 153 ’ 7 ” during that competition , earned a spot to compete in the state finals . In the state meet , Peelman placed 22nd in the discus with a best throw of 144 ’ 9 ”.
Teammate Mason Parris competed in two events at the state finals . Parris finished 2nd in the regional with a best put of 53 ’ 10 ”. He the placed 10th in the shot put at the state meet with a put of 54 ’ 10 ”. Parris also finished third in the regional in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 15.10 . He then advanced to finish 24th in the 110 meter high hurdles at the state meet in a time of 15.33 seconds .
Cody Moore of Franklin County finished 3rd in the 800 meter run in the regional meet in a time of 1:58.40 to earn a spot at the state meet . Moore went on to finish 25th in the 800 meter run at the state meet in a time of 2:01.38 .
