We ’ re now into the good , warm weather , and it really feels good to sweat out in the yard again while attending to all the chores . I hope you ’ re enjoying some pool time because that is always relaxing . I miss the days when we had a pool in our back yard , and all the neighborhood kids would come over and swim . Getting home from work at 11 p . m . after working a fifteen-hour shift , jumping in the shower , and then jumping in the pool always felt great . The shower helped , but soaking in the pool just cooled your whole system down . Then at 5:30 a . m . I would get back up and start over again . Power Plant life was a busy time .

I was honored to be the guest speaker at the Rising Sun Memorial Day event . On the courthouse lawn behind me were 1459 crosses of

departed veterans . That ’ s very humbling . We must never forget those who have secured and protected our freedoms . Our kids have a great opportunity to get a good education and live the American Dream thanks to the sacrifices of so many . American Legion Post 58 did a great job .

I also gave the speech at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Cincinnati . A nice crowd attended . One thousand American Flags on 8 ’ poles were displayed representing the veterans who are buried there . It ’ s an impressive site .

Rising Sun High School has graduated another class who seemed to have been in grade school just the other day ,. Then I look back and realize that I graduated fifty-three years ago . That ’ s strange to write down and see .

The Relay For Life Survivors Dinner was held on May 12 at South Dearborn High School . I know many of the participants who have survived the dreaded C word . My mom & dad both were victims- Mom in 1963 and Dad in 1964 when I was just 15 & 16 . You never forget ! Thank God these wonderful survivors who are still with us . Young Hunter Smith can use help from all of us as he battles . His parents are Mike and Mindy Smith . Hunter will be going into the first grade this coming August . His younger sister is Chelsia . Donation containers are located around Rising Sun .

The school children are ready for two months of fun and sunshine . The outdoors offers so much to do and enjoy , so put up the video games and soak up the sunshine . I hope everyone all stays healthy and are able to return to school and continue their education . Also , be safe on your vacations . We ’ re planning to take the grandkids up to Chillicothe , OH to see the outdoor drama , Tecumseh . We did that two years ago , and they loved it . So much is available to see and do within a short driving distance . One long trip will be to Branson , MO to watch Kelli coach Carli in a national 10-and-under fast pitch softball tournament with an elite all-star team out of Indianapolis . Carli and her buddy , Ava Cutter , love to play softball and will compete with this team .

I have enjoyed Memorial Day and was able to visit with many fine people who love our great nation . Stay safe and healthy !

Tree Trimming Means Better Service For All

Southeastern Indiana REMC has a service territory spanning seven counties – Dearborn , Franklin , Jefferson , Jennings , Ohio , Ripley , and Switzerland . A large number of trees and rugged terrain exists in these counties , and REMC is working hard to reclaim the right-of-ways to improve reliability . Currently , trees are the leading cause of blinks and outages . The emerald ash borer has caused a great deal of problems over the past several years . This invasive beetle is highly destructive to the ash trees in the area . In 2017 alone , 1,598 ash trees had to be cut down .

The REMC board of directors has always taken RELI- ABILITY seriously , which is why they have one of the highest and most aggressive right-of-way budgets in the State of Indiana . While developing their strategic goals and initiatives for the next three to five years , one of the topics of highest priority was the need to adjust the existing rightof-way program to improve reliability .

Last fall , REMC changed from “ Time and Material ” to “ Price-per-Mile ” bidding . For 2018 , they have bid five hundred twenty-five miles between two contractors for “ ground-to-sky ” trimming . Asplundh will be completing the work on the Five- Points and Logan substations . Townsend will be completing the work on the Sunman substation . Comer Contracting will be completing four hundred twenty-five miles of Fecon Mower work on the Texas and Blue Creek substations .

The counties that will be affected by the work being done by Townsend Tree Service on the Sunman sub will include Ripley and Dearborn counties .

The counties that will be affected by the work being done by Asplundh on the Five-Points sub will include Switzerland and Jefferson counties , and on the Logan sub , Dearborn County .

The counties that will be affected by the work being done by Comer Contracting on the Texas sub will be southern Dearborn and Ohio counties and on the Blue Creek sub , Franklin and Dearborn counties .

A spraying contractor will be working on the Enterprise sub this year , which will affect Switzerland and Ohio counties .

Right-of-Way easements

are forty-foot “ ground-tosky .” Residential and yard trees are bid to be cut ten-foot below the Neutral . After that , members have the option to pay to have their trees shaped if it is safe . If it is not safe , members have the opportunity to have the contractor cut the tree down . Many times , members forget or don ’ t pay attention to it , but EVERYONE with service signs a contract that states that no trees are allowed under REMC ’ s lines .

REMC is doing all of this to help cut down on outages caused by trees , which is the number one cause of outages . This process will also help establish a rotation schedule , where members know they will see REMC again in five years . With the changes being made , REMC expects their right-of-way costs to drop . This means that lights won ’ t blink as much when a storm goes through . Fewer outages will result in less overtime being paid and fewer miles on their fleet vehicles .

Spring Sports IHSAA Tournament Updates

By : Chris Nobbe Several spring sports are still continuing further into the postseason of their respective IHSAA tournaments , and , as of press time , some have yet to complete sectional competition . The following is a listing of a few of the area spring sports finishes in various sports .

Oldenburg Academy won the girls sectional tennis title over Batesville with a 3-2 victory in the team match held at South Dearborn . Franklin County followed up a perfect regular season by capturing the Connersville sectional title with a finals win over the host Spartans 5-0 . Oldenburg then defeated Franklin County 3-2 in the first round of regional and Richmond in the finals 4-1 before falling 5-0 to Brownsburg at semi-state .

In girls ’ softball , the 3A sectional final was won by host Franklin County over South Dearborn 3-0 to advance to the regional to

State Farm , Bloomington , IL mington , IL 1211999 face Corydon Central . The host Milan Lady Indians captured the 2A sectional crown with a 4-1 win over Southwestern ( Hanover ). They advance to play Henryville in the regional .

In the Madison sectional in 3A baseball , Franklin County and Batesville were to square off for the crown . In the Switzerland County 2A sectional , South Ripley would play Switzerland County for the title .

Track and field saw the East Central Trojans take both the boys ’ and girls ’ titles with many area athletes performing well at the regional level to advance to the state meet and capturing a few individual event titles .

Also , several athletes from Franklin County and Lawrenceburg competed in the Unified Track and Field tournament .

Golf sectionals were slated to be played on June 1 , 2 , or 4 which is after press time .
