What is it ?

Last month ’ s antique was a coffee grinder or mill . Valerie Wilson , Versailles , described the item accompanied by a wonderful story , “ I have one that was made in Austria . The handle says Ahner Vienna . A friend of mine gave it to me , and it had been her father ’ s . One story that really made this piece come alive to me is the one Laura Ingalls Wilder spoke of in the book , The Long Winter . Because blizzard after blizzard occurred that winter , the trains could not get through with food supplies . It was thought that a man had Wheat seed that I believe lived south of their location . Her future husband , Almanzo Wilder , and another young man went off one day to hopefully find that man … They did and returned as another blizzard began … Because that was seed and had not been ground , Mary , for the most part , would put seed in the mill and grind it . Then their mother would make a very rough bread … that is what kept them alive … Laura would help her father with making twists out of straw to use instead of firewood … thankfully they were in town through this very hard Winter , or they would likely not have survived … Such a small piece , yet the mill played a significant role in sustaining them and others .” The coffee grinder was identified correctly by so many readers including Becky Lloyd , Yorkville , Gayle Rolfes , Harrison , Roberta Struewing , Batesville , Carol Morton , Brookville , James Mara , West Harrison , Rosemary Rinck , New Alsace , Ruth O ’ Neil , Aurora , and David C . Lyman , Guilford
