I hope that everyone enjoyed Halloween and is taking in the fall weather . Fall is personally my favorite time of the year , so I have loved every chance I get to be outside . Thanksgiving and the holiday season is right around the corner .
On Oct . 14 , Sunman Community Park held the first-ever Party in the Park event . People enjoyed listening to live bands while the kids jumped around on inflatables . The weather couldn ’ t have been any nicer for a mid-October day . Congrats to Pat Hollingsworth on winning big from the Chili cook-off ! Sharon Watson took second place , and Leah Hartman won third in the contest .

The Kruse barn in Sunman was damaged by a tornado in Oct . 7
Many people of Sunman were recently recognized for all that they do for our community . The following is a list of community members and businesses that are working hard to make Sunman such a great place to live . Citizen of the Year : Shirley Campbell , Teacher of the Year : Stephanie Schomber , Bus Driver of the Year : Tom Beck . Congratulations to all of the winners !
The Indiana Department of Education has released grades for all Indiana accredited schools . St . Nicholas is proud to announce that they have received an A rating again this year ! The grade is determined by the students ’ performance and the amount of growth achieved on the ISTEP + Test . They received more points in the growth area which is an indicator that hard work is resulting in achievement . It takes students , parents , and staff working as a team to continue experiencing this type of success .
On Oct . 7 a tornado struck Sunman . The farm of John and Jane Kruse was in its path . Tops of trees were twisted as the tornado approached , and the barn suffered damage . “ We are so thankful that the house is okay . We had a lot of help in clean up ,” said Mrs . Kruse .
Last month ’ s question was , “ What building was built from the materials of the Old Brick Church after it was torn down ?” The answer is the building at 104 Jackson Street . John Hashagen purchased the Old Brick Church in 1915

and tore it down to build a two-story building . It housed many different businesses including a bakery , fire station , dry cleaning and now an architectural and entertainment light company .
I didn ’ t have any answers for last month ’ s question , so I hope you make a guess on this one ! Who pulled the fire alarm in Sunman High School out of curiosity as a young kid and now holds a position in the Sunman Fire Department ? Send me an e-mail with your answer !

Let me introduce myself by saying how excited I am to have the opportunity to share a little bit about my community with you . My husband , Kevin , and I own Whitetail Acres Nursery & Landscaping in Brookville , and we have a passion for growing . You will probably see a seasonal tip or suggestion on tree / plant care in each issue . Which leads me to an issue about which I am getting a lot of calls . In the past year and a

The Town of Dillsboro recently purchased a building that will be transformed into a cultural center . Thanks to a generous donation by The Friendship State Bank , the vision center first developed by Thom Maltbe and Rebecca Davies , both local artisans , will become a reality .
“ There are places in every community for artists to share their work ,” Mr . Maltbe explained . “ We want a place where artists can also connect with the community through art .”
Mr . Maltbe is a 37-year Dillsboro resident . He teaches at South Ripley , serves as the Dearborn Highland Art Council president , and offers art lessons .
Ms . Davies , a Dillsboro native , is an accomplished artist whose work is well known on the west and east coasts . She was inspired to bring her art back to her hometown . Ms . Davies and Mr . Maltbe began brainstorming and enlisted Dillsboro Economic Development Director Susan Greco to help them find a place for a pop-up gallery .
half , you ’ ve probably noticed a large number of Blue Spruce around the tri state that are dying . This is caused by a fungus , Rhizosphaera needle cast , and affects both Blue Spruce trees and grafted shrubs . If caught early enough and if your plant is a treatable size , you have a chance at saving it . If you choose to use a fungicide use one containing chlorothalonil . I would recommend removing the infected branches and cleaning up the needle cast on the ground . Prune the tree or shrub to allow better airflow since with any fungus moisture is a big part of the problem . It happens fast , so be on the lookout . Unfortunately , replacing that beautiful baby blue evergreen color is hard . If you should find yourself needing a replacement , a Norway spruce is your best bet for a hardy evergreen with the denseness of a Blue Spruce .
Santa and his reindeer will be on hand to help kick off our holiday season with the traditional November Noel on Nov . 18 from 1-4 on Main Street in Brookville . Friends and families will enjoy Santa and his reindeer , a carriage ride as well as crafts , games , and snacks . Happy holidays .
Our Main Street is almost finished with its face lift . New sidewalks and road look beautiful and are so nice for evening walks .

I know a lot of people had fun over Fall Break and you can include our family in that group . My daughter , Kelli , son-in-law , Rich , and the three grand kids , Carli , Grady , and Coleton , along with Paula and I , visited Disney World for eight days . Everybody had so much fun .
We had to miss the Navy Bean Festival , but I heard good things about it . Congratulations to Charlie Levi for being named Grand Marshal . Charlie is very communityminded , especially when it comes to the band , fire department and old cars . The Navy Bean Festival is great for residents who don ’ t get a chance to go to the Farmers Fair or down to Vevay for the

Dillsboro Town Council Members and local artist , accept a check from The Friendship State Bank ( Left to Right ) Woody Fryman , Janice Sullivan , Tom Lewis , Shannon Rickett , Chris Meyer , Julie Mathias , Rachel Davies , and Mary Lou Powers .
Ms . Greco contacted Friendship State Bank CEO , Chris Meyer , regarding the Friendship Insurance building .
“ The building seemed to be great for the purpose ,” Ms . Greco said . “ Many ideas spawned and exploded because of Mr . Meyer ’ s willingness to discuss anything . He asked how both the city and The Friendship State Bank could make this happen .”
“ Art is an important component of vibrant communities ,” Mr . Meyer shared . “ Friendship State Bank is excited to support the conversion of this empty building into a thriving center for Dillsboro .”
The center will be a workspace where artists can grow their work as well as exchange ideas with fellow artists . The building will be open to the public where individuals are encouraged to interact with artists and get a glimpse into a day in the life of an artist .
Visual and performance-based art will be included in the center . Painters , potters , photographers , poets , musicians , dancers and writers are all welcome . Additionally , events including juried art shows , photography exhibits and more are envisioned . Artists ’ works will also be available for purchase at the center .
The building ’ s upstairs apartment will accommodate space for an “ artist in residence .” The space will provide an affordable place in which an artist can live and work . Additionally , it will allow the center to be open additional hours for the public .
The city ’ s short-term goal is to open the building as soon as possible so that artists may begin working . Artists will put in the time to clean , paint , and prepare the building . They hope to host a public grand opening in December .
Ms . Greco attributes collaboration as the key to this project ’ s realization . She looks forward to the continued cycle that collaboration tends to spark . A business contributes to the community where the artists are then provided space to work . Artists “ give back ” by providing lessons and working with others . The cycle of collaboration and giving continues to grow .
