St . Louis School teachers developed eclipse lessons to prepare students for the solar event that they experienced in August while wearing their NASA approved glasses . Jenny Lents , Language Arts teacher , reported that seventh and eighth graders were transformed into reporters and began the week by generating questions , conducting research , and writing scripts for the newscasts . Live reporters were on the scene to share their solar experience . Their goal was to incorporate robust voice , fluency , and word choice in writing and speaking , and to connect students with real-world experiences and audiences .

That Bright Spirit

By Melanie Alexander
Most of us know that this is a great place to live because of the spirit of our wonderful neighbors . This story offers some proof of that spirit and the way we care for our neighbors . My cousin , Robert Rossman from West Harrison , suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest just after visiting the Bright Veterinary Clinic with his dog in late May . He is now recovering in a skilled nursing facility near Indianapolis and asked that I convey his thanks for some of the many folks who have gone the “ extra mile ” during these past months . ( I am now paraphrasing Bob ’ s words .)
Robert Rossman began , “ I ’ ve lived in this area almost my entire life and always knew that folks go out of their way to work together on community tasks . But events that occurred this year taught me how special our community is when these folks were so supportive when I really needed help . The following list is not complete but includes some of the many special people who live around here . Although I cannot thank everyone individually , I want to share my gratitude for all the help I ’ ve received .” Thank you to :
• The couple pumping gasoline across Stateline Road who rushed over to check on me and summoned help
• The person holding an umbrella to shield me from the rain while awaiting EMS
• The first responders who arrived quickly to initiate care
• Dearborn County Hospital Emergency Room staff
• All of the staff at Bright Veterinary Clinic who cared for and comforted my dog .
• Friends and neighbors who have gone above and beyond to keep in touch ( Fellow members of my Lodge [ IOOF ], fellow alums from Harrison High School , etc .) “ I have always been impressed by the way people in this area are concerned about each other and care for their friends and neighbors , “ said Mr . Rossman . “ This experience has reinforced my thoughts on what makes our communities a great place to live .”
