Shades for an Amazing Cause

by Nicole Williams
The old saying goes , “ It takes a village to raise a child .” But in this particular case , it is the child who is helping to support the village .
Jessie Loftus , age six , lives with her family in Harrison , Ohio . Her unique endeavor began when she was participating in an American Girl Doll fashion show at the age of three . The fashion show was organized to raise money for the Aubrey Rose Foundation , which provides support to families with a sick child through financial aid and emotional support . Upon learning about the sick children and their families , Jessie announced to her mom , Jennifer Loftus , she wanted to come up with an idea to help .
A sunny day later , while on the way to lunch , Jessie asked her mom to hand her a pair of sunglasses . She held them in her hand and said , “ I know mom , I can ‘ Bling ’ out sunglasses and sell them .” After a visit to their local craft store and a purchase of three sunglasses and supplies , the first pair of shades were officially produced .
Since that day , Jessie has sold enough of her unique sunglasses to donate over $ 2,000 to the Aubrey Rose Foundation . She reaches her buyers through community garage sales , local craft shows and has a website where customers can learn more about her work and view the many styles of 100 % UV protected glasses . Jessie works from a rolling cart her family bought her where she keeps all of her supplies . It becomes a family affair as her brother Jack ( 8 ) and sister Julia ( 5 ) enjoy helping their sister . Jessie ’ s dad , John , even goes as far as sanding down the back of the buttons to ensure they fit properly and adhere better with the cement glue . Jennifer handles all of the marketing and logistics where all proceeds from the sales go towards the gifting of shades .
It was in April of 2014 her idea went from local to global . Channel 5 took an interest in Jessie ’ s mission and aired her story . The story grabbed the attention of an individual who was heading to an orphanage in Kenya . The woman was interested in buying 60 pairs of Jessie ’ s shades in hopes to give them as gifts to the orphanage she was visiting . Jessie was not familiar with what an orphanage was at that time and had to have it explained to her . The idea that there were children living in poverty without parents shook Jessie . She decided to design and make all 60 pairs and send them to Kenya as a gift from herself personally . With each individual card , she included a pair of sunglasses to for each orphan at the Waweza Orphanage . In return , Jessie received pictures of all the children smiling while wearing the shades that she had created for them . The picture made such an impact on Jessie that she wanted to do even more . As of now , Jessie has gifted over 1,000 pairs of shades to children in Haiti , Uganda , Kenya , Philippines , Mufindi , the Navajo and many other places .
The growing charity did not stop at the gifting of sunglasses . Jessie learned of an orphanage geared towards deaf children located in Africa called Kakamega School for the deaf . They were in desperate need of money in order to purchase a live cow , which would provide the children living there with fresh milk daily . Jessie was able to raise enough money to buy the orphanage three cows . Their names are Sunshine , Flowers , and most recently , Maryhelen .
This past May , a strong storm rolled through the Waweza Orphanage , where Jessie originally gifted her first set of shades . Among the leftover ruins was the orphanage playground . Jessie immediately went to work and since then has been able to raise enough money to construct a new playground for the children . Jessie is currently waiting for a picture of the final product and excited to see the outcome .
Jessie has a book with a lot of the children she has connected with through the years . She loves to go through the book and pray for her “ friends ”. Her parents are extremely proud . “ We tell her she is shining
