Fifty years after graduation , the Sunman High School Class of 1967 was finally able to take their senior class trip to Washington , D . C . The Sunman High senior class tradition was to go to Washington , but the Class of 1967 was denied the opportunity to go due to misconduct of prior classes .
Now , fifty years later , the students who are “ seniors ” once again were able to fulfill that dream and took their BEACON along ! Classmates Joan Botts , Susan Bross , Dennis Feller , Edna Glibert , Gege Grills , Ann Hoff , Leona Hoff , Jennie and Jerry Maune , Nancy Roberson , Mike Stenger , DeVota Weberding , along with their spouses or significant others , boarded a bus and headed to Washington .
After visiting many sites including Arlington , The War Memorials , Washington Monuments , Smithsonian Museums , The National Basilica , the White House and at last getting their class picture on the Capitol steps , they headed home with many fond memories and renewed friendships .
Many thanks to Carroll and Judy Lanning for making this senior trip possible .
I recently lost another good friend to cancer . Barb Kissell Mitchell passed on to be home with our Lord on August 4 . She is survived by her loving husband Harry “ Mitch ”, sons , Art , Jeff , Jon and Emily Kissell , Tracy Mitchell Hughes and Dominick and Kimberly Mitchell , 11 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter . I will miss her smile and all of the fun times we spent together .
Congratulations go to Walter Schuman on receiving his fifty-year membership pin from the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Assoc . He was presented his pin by Steve Macke of the IVFA on Aug . 4 during St . Leon Vol . Fire Dept . firemen ’ s festival . Wally served for many years as our fire chief before he retired from active duty on the department . What an accomplishment !
The Best Little Oktoberfest is set for Oct . 6-7 . The St . Joseph American Legion Post 464 boasts the Big Bucks Raffle prize of $ 5,000 . This year we ' re selling 350 Big Bucks Raffle tickets at $ 50 each .
The big weekend party is from mid-afternoon until midnight at our Legion Post .
Raffle suspense will build that Saturday afternoon when the first name to be drawn wins $ 250 . Names will continue to be pulled every half hour between 5:00 pm and 8:30 pm . when someone will win $ 100 each time . At 9:30 pm the final numbers will be drawn . Those lucky ticket holders will go home with $ 200 , $ 400 $ 600 , $ 1000 , and $ 5000 . Tickets are available by calling Harry Hartman at ( 812 ) 209-8002 .
Oktoberfest tradition dates back over 200 years in Germany when the Emperor had a wedding for his daughter in October .
Most of the people around St . Leon originated from Germany , so this is a natural fit . Organizers set up festive decorations to make attendees feel the atmosphere of occasion which includes a special-picket fence , corn shucks , pumpkins and picnic tables .
The beer garden features a variety of German and Domestic brews . The meals are substantial . Friday all-youcan-eat fish fry includes fries , baked beans , and coleslaw . Featured on Saturday is the special recipe St . Leon famous fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes , green beans , coleslaw , and dessert . You can purchase tickets at the door for the chicken dinner . A super tasty smoked , thick-cut pork chop is served with German potato salad , green beans , sauerkraut , coleslaw , and dessert . Kids ' meals are half price . Any of the three dinners may be purchased with a raffle stub .
For the less hungry festgoers , German-style sausage and burgers will be available from the grill .
Diners can eat inside the hall or outside in two large pavilions that have heaters and canvases to ensure a pleasant atmosphere .
Because we want this to be a family event Girl Scout Troops have organized the usual kiddie games .
One of the most fun things we have is the pie auction . We usually have high drama as the bids go higher and higher for those pies . We usually have about fifteen delectable homemade confections including peach , custard , cherry , blackberry , apple , and other popular pies .
Walter with St . Leon Vol Fire Dept members : left to right- Don Schuman , Steve Macke from the IVFA , Ken Gaynor , Dave Kuhn , Ron Zimmer , Roger Angelo , Debbie Zimmer , Jon Hartman , Scott Becker , Mark Eisele , Joe Schuman and Ron Schuman .
Music adds to the fun . To get the party started Friday , we always have a good showing for Karaoke . The festive night is topped off with music by Squeeze Play , a popular band playing German and American music to dance to . You might even see the chicken dance .
Proceeds are used to support American Legion programs like Boys and Girls State . The Legion provides the color guard at military funerals and contributions to the community . We make visits to service members at the VA Hospital in Cincinnati several times annually and support many other qualified charities . ( Please see ad on page 23 .)
