Lilly Finalists Receive Scholarships

Carl Sebastian Smith , a Lawrenceburg High School senior , recently learned that he is the recipient of a prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship ( LECS ). The Dearborn Community Foundation ( DCF ) and the scholarship committee awarded the full-tuition scholarship to the 2018 LECS recipient and his family during a surprise visit . Mr . Smith receives a fouryear , full-tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of his choice along with a $ 900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment .
Mr . Smith of Aurora is the son of Evelyn Santiago and Todd Smith . He plans to attend Purdue University to study Biology and Dentistry . At Lawrenceburg High School , Mr . Smith has been very active in many clubs and groups , including Academic Team ; Spanish Club ( President ); Key Club ; National Honor Society ; Spanish Honor Society ; and Student Government . Mr . Smith also has found time to work part-time at Subway during his high school years . “ Sebastian is a fine young man who was selected among an excellent group of applicants for the high honor of receiving the Lilly scholarship ,” said Fred McCarter , Executive Director of DCF . “ Our community should be very proud of this honor student and the other five finalists for this prestigious award .”
The five remaining LECS finalists are recognized as 2018 Dearborn Community Foundation Scholarship recipients . Each student receives a $ 1,000 scholarship paid directly to the student ’ s school .
The scholarship is renewable for up to four years of secondary education at the college or university of the student ’ s choice . The Foundation is pleased to award the 2018 DCF scholarships to Madison Fentress , South Dearborn High School ; Jacob Herbert of Oldenburg Academy ; Logan Lawrence , Lawrenceburg High School ; Jamie Morman , East Central High School ; and Paige Kirkey , South Dearborn High School .
The Ripley County Community Foundation , Inc . is pleased to announce that Toria Tucker has been named Ripley County ’ s 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar . Toria will receive full tuition to the Indiana College or University of her choice and a $ 900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment .
Toria is the daughter of Trace and Denise Tucker of Versailles and is a senior at South Ripley High School . Toria is a class officer , a Senior Mentor , is the Feature and Social Media Editor of the school newspaper , and a four-year member of the varsity volleyball and basketball teams . She was the County Vice Chairman at Hoosier Girls State , is a Board Member of Champions Together , and is a Special Olympics Summer Games volunteer .
“ I ’ ve known the Tucker family for a number of years and witnessed Toria progress from elementary school through Junior High and now as a senior . She is a very special young lady who displays the intangibles in life that make a person successful . She is a soft-spoken leader in our building , someone
who displays compassion , dedication , and zeal in every opportunity that she pursues . I have no doubt she is a student who will represent the Lilly Foundation with honor throughout her college years . All of the South Ripley family is very proud of Toria and very happy for her family , and we wish her the best in her future endeavors ” said Rod Hite , South Ripley Principal .

Each of these finalists will receive a $ 2,000 Ripley County Community Foundation Scholarship in their freshman year and will receive a Grateful Family Scholarship in their sophomore year .

The LECS is the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment , Inc . initiative to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana . It also helps increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities . The initiative is designed to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business , governmental , educational , not-for-profit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state .
