BATESVILLE

As we welcome the New Year , I do so with much hope an anticipation . With that in mind , I ’ ve assembled my list of Hopes for Batesville in 2018 :
I hope Merkel Road will be completed and open for travel . Personally , I miss my country route from Batesville to Oldenburg , and I ’ m sure those living along Merkel Road would like to see it re-opened . When completed , Merkel Road will be a true asset to commerce and locals alike !
I hope the third phase of the Batesville Area Resource Center will be complete and all its social service agencies open for business . As a former BARC board member , I am so proud of what has been accomplished by this team of volunteers . As a Batesville resident , I ’ m excited to see an older building repurposed and serving those in need in Ripley and Franklin counties !
I hope the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce will consider a night time Christmas parade . Personally , I love Christmas lights … and who doesn ’ t love a parade ? Let ’ s combine Christmas lights with our Christmas Parade and truly light up Batesville !
I hope The Biergarten opens again . The outdoor area has brought another destination to our downtown !
I hope the Batesville Area Historical Center will welcome a record number of visitors in 2018 . As one who loves history and my hometown , I can attest to the outstanding efforts of the BAHS volunteers who bring historical exhibits to our community . If you ’ ve never visited the Historical Center , add it to your to-do list when it reopens in March .
I hope Batesville ’ s Parks & Recreation will receive funding to continue the amenities we enjoy through the City ’ s parks , pool , and walking trails . As a community , we are fortunate to have all that is afforded through the Parks and

Recreation Department , let ’ s ensure their future .
I hope that all animals in need of a home find their “ furever ” families , and that pet owners take responsibility for their pets ’ reproductive health . My Savannah came to me eleven years ago via the Batesville Street Department and the thoughtfulness of a good friend , and my life has never been the same . If you have room in your heart and home , consider adopting a pet in 2018 .
I hope consideration will be given to establishing a walking and bike trail from Batesville to Oldenburg . Highway 229 connects these communities but is so narrow that walking or biking along 229 is extremely dangerous . While I ’ m wishing … I ’ d like for the trail to be named the “ Nun Run ,” but that may truly be wishful thinking . On a personal note … I hope each of us takes time for prayer . Our family increased by two when my niece gave birth to twins in February at only twenty-five weeks gestation , with each weighing about 1.5 lbs . Our family soon realized the power of prayer as we believe God ’ s hand guided the healthcare professionals responsible for the twins ’ progress . May 2018 be the year that we remember to pray not only when we are in need but to thank God for the blessings received .
That ’ s Sue ’ s news for now !

The Dirty Dozen , The Magnificent Seven , The Fab Four , The Three Musketeers …
And now the Dillsboro Seven ! Seven artists : Darian Couch , Rebecca Davies , Mary Jo Finnegan , Virginia Kramer , Thom Maltbie , Kendal Miller , and Cathy Patton were represented in the inaugural exhibit at the newly formed Dillsboro Arts Friendship Gallery , located at Heritage Pointe , North and Bank .
Dillsboro Arts was the brainchild of forward-looking members of the community who see the arts as an important , enriching addition to our town . After discussions and negotiations among artists , supporters and officials , and a spirit of generosity , a building was purchased to house this new adventure into the diverse world of Arts expression .
To assure viewing at its best , walls were painted , and proper lighting was installed . Plans for more improvements have been made . While our vision is to have themed exhibits changing on a regular basis , with an open call to artists , we also see the space as an opportunity to host special events , offer classes
Dillsboro Arts is becoming a hub for community gatherings for those who enjoy art .
and establish regular hours for conversation . The list of ideas for Dillsboro Arts fills pages , and if all were implemented , it would take us well into the future . We are open to suggestions and are currently reviewing exhibit proposals .
At the time of publication , we will have installed our second exhibition : “ Six Degrees- Dillsboro Connections .” This will be an exhibit of work by artists with a link to Dillsboro , submitted by members of the community with a description of that connection .
Dillsboro Arts is open Sat . 10-2 and Thurs . 4-6 with more regular hours to be determined . We hope to offer music , storytelling , open mic , etc . Stop by and share your ideas , view the work in the galleries , bring your sketchbook or journal , and let ’ s draw , write a poem , or have a conversation about art and life .
