DEAR

ARIE

Dear Marie ,
I want to start by saying , “ I love your column .” With that being said , I have a situation that I ’ m struggling with- my man-child . I love my husband ; he is loving , caring , compassionate , and honest . We have a wonderful relationship except for one thing- he is a messy person . You wouldn ’ t know it to look at him- he is very well dressed and even manages to keep his precious car in order . So it ’ s hard for me to understand why everything else is a disaster . I can tell exactly where he has been and what he has done around the house because he left traces of his activities all over . He leaves food wrappers , empty cans , utensils , and junk mail on the kitchen counter , just to name a few things . The different shoes he wears throughout the week are left by the back door , the front door , in front of the couch , or , depending on how much of a hurry he is when he gets home , the bathroom .
The bathroom is another area that is indeed a strugglehair all over the bar of soap , toothpaste residue all over the sink , dirty underwear on the floor . He uses my towel every day and manages to soak the floor because he can ’ t dry off before he gets out of the shower . The list is endless . We ’ ve talked about it continually , and I ’ m tired of complaining . But I ’ m tired of the mess . What can I do to get him to pick up after himself ? Desperately distressed , Katherine from Cincinnati
Dear Katherine , I ’ m so glad to hear you love my column ! Thank you . I can understand why you are desperately distressed .
My first thought is that I ’ m sorry your mother-in-law did

Registration Required such a poor job of raising her son . Ultimately , parents are the ones who teach their children how to clean up after themselves . I understand how frustrating it is to have a spouse who is a slob .
Yelling and complaining won ’ t work . I recommend the tough love approach which will not be easy for you . Leave his things where he drops them . The exception will be the common areas , the bathroom , and the kitchen . For the bathroom , I say put whatever he leaves on the floor in a pile in the hall outside the bathroom ; this room needs to be clean and sanitary for the health of your family . In the kitchen , I say clean it anyway because you can ’ t cook around his mess , and again it is a health issue for your family . Let him suffer the consequences of the rest of his mess . When he is looking for that favorite piece of clothing , and he has to search for it or asks you where it is , you can say , “ It ’ s wherever you left it .” You can tell him you didn ’ t sign up to be his mom or his servant ; you signed up to be his partner in life . You can remind him that you agreed to be together for “ better or for worse .” And tell him he can make it better or worse by his behavior .
Please don ’ t let the anger you feel about this eat away at you . Remind yourself that you love your husband- he ’ s your best friend ; count your blessings of how lucky you are to be with him . Remember that he is human and he has flaws , as we all do .

me wrongthe shelter does very well with kittens , but we already have a lot . As for me , I like to give them a merry game of chase , but I ’ ve been told this is not good behavior . To be adopted , I have to be on my best behavior .
I ’ ve heard the best thing to do is to have your cat spayed or neutered . Here at the shelter , you can even get a $ 30 voucher to help with the cost at your vet ’ s office if you are a resident of Dearborn County . Just call or come in and ask for a voucher .
If you have feral cats around , call our shelter at 812-577-0829 and ask for Brenda to make an appointment . All you have to do is trap the cats and bring them into Paws the day before surgery then pick them up the day after surgery and return them to the area

where they were trapped . We spay / neuter them , vaccinate , and give flea meds at no cost to you .
Cats can take care of themselves , so if a cat shows up at your house and you feed it , guess what- it becomes your cat . If you don ’ t feed it , the cat will move on or go back to where it came from . The biggest mistake people make is feeding a cat , thinking it is lost or hungry . Ask yourself , “ Is it thin or injured ?” If not , the cat will move on . Most free-roaming cats have homes . As a dog , I can tell you that I like to have my meal served to me , then to curl up on your lap or at your feet and take a nap . Nothing wrong with that . I also prefer a good game of toss or tug of war . I will give you as much love and licks as you can handle . So whether it ’ s your cat or not , please help us by controlling the unwanted over population . Paws also offers spay / neuter vouchers for canines to keep my canine friends healthy and happier .
Come in and visit us . If you have any questions , please send us an email to pawshumanecenter @ pawsdearborn . org Take care of your furbabies . Love you , BamBam
